Pistons and rotors :
Is it possible to create ships with pistons or rotors ? Or will they still flip over ?

My own experience is that pistons, rotors, and hinges are difficult to implement in a ship that flies in an atmosphere; the tendency is for the ship to drift (usually down). This phenomenon occurs because of the "phantom" forces that occur with the sub-grids attached to those components. I've not noticed this problem in space.

Hi, yes and we can see a lot are able to find the working stable solutions just looking at the Workshop.

I made multigrid creations and I can tell it just need a engineer trying/testing different setups to find the stable solutions, you notice the "not working" setups by doing so and find some good clues to make it more stable.

I made a ramp that can fold/unfold on a Atmos ship that gave the problem "Ship moving on its own" caused by phantom forces but trying different setup gave me the stable solution.

A lot can be done with pistons, rotors, hinges and the best advice I can share is
"Don't keep the not working setups but redo different till solution found."

For example, here is one with folding "legs" that is very very stable using rotor on hinge :

Veteran Tip

Adding a rotor on the piston head will make it extend/reverse using the default "impulse axis" that is limited when playing in the default mode so no need to change that value for the piston to extend.

This setup can help a lot :

I have been building Exploration Ships, I use hinges to make Wings for my ships and give it a different dimensions, 1 hinge per wings... Noting more than just an aesthetic... it doesn't make phantom forces, with thrusters ON, and on Single Player only...

Should You go on joining the Official Keen Servers, this not the case,

I printed the same ship i have at the Single Player, and it will flip over... the Most Worst will be, when the server is streaming, you might see it your subgrids LOOKED*** "Detached", Disconnected and on different position, specially in-side your safezone... only to relog its normal again...

I have also instances that my ship's wings just*** disappear after I jump on a different location without disconnecting my hinges, right after I removing my Safezone and turning my Spacecraft from Station to Ship (I'm a trader in server).

The only way for me to eliminate that annoying Bug is to stick them with magnetic plates and Name your Subgrids...

Just make it simple... for Hinges, Rotors and pistons... after using them, secure them with magnetic plates/landing gears...

I have tried Simple Ramp gates and Hinge Wings with those function blocks, I use magnetic plates to secure* them... and avoid putting to much heavy loads on the subgrid...

Now if your trying to go more daring, like a sexy collapsing landgears, excavator arms, origami ramps and gates, you have to make lots of trial and error... and it will be very hard to maintain should it get broken, Its Build-able and Very Hard, lots of efforts to implement it on Survival... :selike:

So, the answer to my question is, yes, it's still B0rken as ♥♥♥♥ :D

Not broken but limited and more because the working solutions may not be what we wanted to do.

= Not all setups are working but we can see a lot are able to create very cool Multi-gid creations.

I will add :

A good example of working Multigrid creations is BlackArmor's Workshop :

I Never spoke of YES, and NO...

But I speak of how you could "Co-exists" with the game's limitation and short comings...

Either your to lazy to do it, Or your ran out of RAM... :clang: :clang: :clang:

by the God's, this one has no reading comprehension...

No, broken af, I've experimented tons with it earlier, I have several thousand hours sunk into this game just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about with things trying to see if it works. Extended drills on a mining ship to try to create a compact as possible version, failing due to it constantly doing weird ♥♥♥♥ for no reason. Like flipping over and spinning around with increased velocity until it exploded and more. Large ships with something a simple as a piston extending with a frigging connector, having the entire ship rip itself apart. Stuff like that should be doable, but is not, and have never been properly looked into. Items should not create its own personal gravity fields unless its frigging supposed to do so.

Ok, so you already tried a lot of concepts and they were not working. in that case to only thing I can add would be to share your creations here asking players to help find new stable solutions.

Or send those not working setups to the ones working on the game.

I can tell I sent the first not working setup to the SE programmers, it was my repro of Mass Effect Reaper and they were not able to fix at that time but it is now working using a different setup.

So I am supposed to sit down and design ships, so they can "look at why" they are flipping over, like they have been for the past five years?.
How did -they- miss that. We didnt.

I just avoid the "not working setup" so I play with the working ones only.

You asked :
" Is it possible to create ships with pistons or rotors ? "

My answer is = Yes.

But as we all know, in the real world, it isnt.
They will flip over, and ♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥ up.

And why some are able to seems a mystery ;)

I commonly use rotors/pistons/hinges, usually with little to no problems (though I know fairly well what to avoid from expirience).

That is in single player with world set to offline though, MP is much more prone to issues due to de-sincs and simillar problems.

So basically, I don't know what is causing you trouble, could be anything rangeing from user error to some sort of incompatibility to your PC hardware causing instability.
