How to test ships? (combat-wise)
Obviously you just build a ship, see if it flies the way you want it to.
But how do you test how effective it is combat wise? Spawning turrets and setting them enemy or having them target friends is not really that dynamic. Those turrets are also static.

Is there any good scenario based around making ships and testing them (even combat-wise)

I thought the common first stage of testing is putting the ship on one of the easy-start scenarios and drive past a pirate outpost. Pirates will spawn drones to attack you.

On my fighter test game and since I know scripts I control a pile of pirate antenna. To test a fighter, I activate 6 pirate antenna that make a bunch of drones to fight.

Been pretty difficult to find a pirate outpost. I am unsure if one of my mods are working incorrectly or if I am unlucky.

EVERY easy-start game has a pirate outpost within about 5km of the starting easy-start station. Will show as a red signal and pretty hard to miss. Easy-start-earth has a pirate headquarters 35km from starting location that has drones and several stationary turrets to shoot at you.

I play with "More Encounters Faction Wars Npc Vs NPC vs player" mod.

yeah i dono.

that's why i asked what the weapons are for. figured it's a multiplayer thing

you can turn on wolfs and shoot at those
or go into creative and change the faction of the thing you just built to the space pirate faction. can only be done in creative tho. so..

You don't need MODs, just start in custom game, easy earth, there you have a base with 4.5km distance from a pirate base that will spawn drones to fight it...

If your creation CAN with stand 4 drone battle,

Then Disable the Antenna of the Base (Can no longer call for drones)

And destroy the 1 Large grid Gatling Gun and Missile Turrets... with 10% to 15% damage to your small grid combat vehicle from all that engagements...

We can use the custom world where we start at a default Station/Faction, like the one named "Earth Start" got enemy station to conquer on all Planets, Moons and Space if all is enabled in the world advanced settings.
