there was a post on ksh forum from a dev acknowledging the issue but no estimation on a fix.
my engineer seems to have perfect night vision and its annoying removes the need for any lights.
If its still to bright, then close the SSAO tab (unchecking the radio button) and open the
imageFX setiing (think its called that, atm not on a PC with SE, doing this on top of my head) and fiddle there with the Contrast and Brightness setting to you'r liking..
Now dark is with me really DARK again, cant see crap without lights...
Somehow makes the whole game prettier too again with deep dark shadows.
Shift F12 doesn't do crap.
Tried it, the dev mode does not recognize it as creative, even though was fully able to drop a block. I've tried the dev mode in creative, but I was unimpressed. Looked like crap.
you are awesome, ive been playing around with this and got my game to be really dark and everything seem to work ok (lighting etc)
what i changed was the following..
image settings - exposure = -2.876
ssao - contrast = 0.836
if you want to go super dark then also the following
render overides - untick tonemapping.
also as icecold951 said it doesnt work in survival even with alt f10 i had to switch the game to creative mode in world settings to open dev console (make sure you depower your base first to avoid inventory loss)
again thanks to Arran Chace for suggestion this method! <3

Press LCTRL + F12, then tab RENDER then:
1) HDR settings needs to be tweaked, because in some cases, it works exactly opposite as it should be.
2) BUT main problem is in VERY TERRIBLE setting in "IMAGE SETTINGS" menu. Via this, now we can make DARK underground bases in case of power/light failure completely BLACK, just control lights shining ...
I am experimenting with this little bit ... trying to find best realistic option ... let you know my findings and values later.

As I said...
It's not the same thing.
I've dealt with these settings before.
If you mess with contrast, brightness, etc., every shadow get dark, along with what should not be different. This is no different than changing the settings of your monitor.
"All the light sources are affected"
Developers need only bring the lighting system and previous shading right back again.

In this video we can see how good the game's lighting system.
