.Net Framework 4.6.1 failing to install
The steam installer claims it is installing .Net Framework v4.6.1, but when I attempt to launch the game, I get an error stating that the required .Net version is not installed. Attempting to install v4.6.1 manually (with both online and offline installer packages) results in the same failure mode: the installation package is attempting to install v4.5.3, which (to my admittedly limited knowledge) is a version that doesn't even exist. 4.5.2 is the highest package I could find, after which MS released 4.6. Yet the installer continues to tell me that the network resource containing the necessary msi ('netfx_Full_LDR_x64.msi') is unavailable.

Furthermore, "programs and features" shows .Net Framework 4.5.3 as being installed, but any attempt to uninstall it results in the same error the 4.6.1 installer throws: hey, this thing that we say is here, doesn't actually exist.

What is going on here? Can someone shed some light on this for me? I'm running Win 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit.

Thanks MJ, but I did try that web installer already. It, along with the offline installer, are the ones driving me nuts, asking for things that don't appear to exist :(

Figured it out. For some unkown-to-me reason there was a corrupt install of v4.5.3 that would not uninstall (the one I thought should not exist). Running the MS program install/uninstall utility found what I believe to have been a registry error which prevented any manipulation of the installation. V4.6.1 installed perfectly after the fix was applied.

Likely an obscure problem that only I have experienced, but figured I'd post my fix here on the off chance that somone else happens to have a similar issue.
can you tell me how you fixed it ? I can't run it I am really frustrated PLEASE help!

Download the offline version of the installer from the link below and run it manually. If you are having the same issue as liquid51 it should uninstall prior version of .Net and replace them with the latest version.

I doubt anyone will have my specific problem; I have various Visual Studio packages installed for some dev projects I've been working on. I'm assuming one of them installed an outdated CTP that included the mysterious v4.5.3. That installation shows up in my 'Programs and Features' window, but there was actually nothing installed. Somewhere along the way a registry entry was not handled properly I'm assuming. Trying to uninstall by any means resulted in missing file errors.

As I mentioned above, in the rare case you do have this issue, run the MS install/uninstall utility to remove the bugged installation; the steam update installer could not uninstall it because the .msi did not exist. Likewise, the MS web and offline installer for v4.6.1 failed as well for the same reason.

If this is what you are experiencing, get the MS utlity here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/mats/program_install_and_uninstall

Sorry to reiterate myself again, but I know how frustrating these kind of issues can be. It's massively more frustrating when someone with an issue posts "I FIXED IT!" and never explains what they did to fix the issue. So, I'm just trying to do my part :P

I have the same problem... now if only OP's solution would work on Windows 10... the glaring fact that Microsoft's tool isn't updated for Windows 10 is quite ironic and saddening at the same time... anyone have another solution that I could try?
