If your going with 2, put 1 jump drive at the front of the ship, and the other at the back
If 4 do the same as the other suggestion ^ or put 2 jump drives on either side of the ship
Or go with 1 on everyside of the ship
Minimum of 2 jump drives anyway
I don't play survival, and In creative I only build HUGE ships. So, I typically go with at least 8-10, which will often give me a range of around 600-1000 kilometers. I might go for up to 20 (but that was for my 150,000,000 kg build)
I would say it really depends on if you want something long-range for attack and resource gathering, or if you need something short-range for defense and resource gathering. It also depends on the mass of the ship. I'll just say that if you're using light armor, 4 should be fine. Heavy armor, go with maybe 6-8. More than one layer of heavy armor DEFINITELY 8+
I typically have 3-5 layers of heavy armor because none of my ships are ever going to be in survival, which is why I have so many jump drives.
I was building a ship which was mostly jump drives, with a large reactor, solar panels and a battery. It's special purpose was to transport salvaged ships/space stations the 50-300Km back to home base.
