Also, I recomend using spectator mode travel around your world faster. Make sure you have it enabled under your world settings and just press F8 to enter spectator mode (F6 to disable it) and use your mouse wheel to increase your movement speed. Then just spawn planet in using Shft-10 like I said previously (Blueprints as well for pirates)
P.S. If your ok with using mods, I highly recommend checking out some of the planets in the workshop. I managed to make a pretty sweet universe with them!
First, I have my doubts the game engine can adequately handle a 12 planet solar system.
Second, have fun manually placing a few billion planets and asteroids.
Third, assuming the actual ability to place all of this, there are a number of concerns. Where should the next closest solar system be placed, since the players won't be able to see it or predict its location? Player ships are going to need a LOT of jump drives because space is big and the probability of jumping in the correct direction is small.
Try setting up a solar system first, then a local star cluster, and go from there.
OK... I was able to make a 60 planet world (or galaxie). My pc had no issues handling it. Now a couple billion? Thats insanity. Regardless, its not difficult at all. You only experience issues if your pc can't handle being on planets.
