What is an arc furnace?

All I can find out from searches is it used to be called a blast furnace. Could someone tell me what it does please?

It can only refine Iron, but it's at a less cost and is faster, than the refinery.

It's a furnace smaller than a refinery that only smelts iron a little faster than a refinery and is a little more efficient.

it have a bug.
the delivery system transport the iron ore but will not deliver the ironbars.

I was REALLLY hoping it was a cheaper refinery, which I guess it is, but I'm going to have to build the big one after all. Lets hope I can get all the materials moved before meteors finish demolishing my lone survivor starting platform!

Though you might not like this answer, there is a collection of them on the workshop mods section. Someone posted a mod that give you all ten of them, one for each resource. Though, I will say the authors naming conventions need some work.

Interesting. Appreciate the suggestion. I must admit you are correct, I dislike using Mods at present due to the issues encountered after each update. What I've had to do is simply build 9 refineries and 3 I use specifically for Uranium. Works great.

Pretty much this. It refines iron ore only, but is faster at it, cheaper to build, consumes less power and takes up less space than a refinery.

It was probably a naming error that in the game's hotbar config, it is called a Blast Furnace. Real life arc furnaces use bolts of electricity to generate intense heat to melt melt metal.

Arc furnaces traditionaly are used to make alloys as well due to thier design they are very efficient for this purpose.

Honestly I've never had any issues at all processing iron. The regular refineries handle it so quickly that they can empty an entire (small ship) large cargo container of iron in less than five minutes.

Stuff like uranium and other heavy metals tend to clog up my refineries, iron passes right through. It would be nice if we could have a refinery tailored to the conditions required to refine uranium and uranium only, since it is the lifeblood of everything currently in space engineers. That is, until you manage to build a massive solar farm and battery network, but at that point refining ore is the least of your worries.

I thought lone survivor came with a refinery. Are you playing a different world?

It does come with a refinery I tried one yesterday. Really pissed me off in the first three min of the game I was standing next to the ref about to put in my first lot of ore when a meteor hit and killed me.. A few min later Im standing in the same place again delivering my second lot of ore and a meteor takes out the reactor!!! Ive put in almost 30 hours now I think and Ive never been hit or had anything important hit. In the first ten min of my game on normal two hits gah!
