The World eater
Hello space pals. I recenttly thought of making a drill that could eat entire asteroids. However, I thought of some immediate problems. If there is enough force from the drills over the length of arm of the pistons, the mining machine might snap or fumble in all directions and explode. Exactly what is the best way to counter act torque from the drills. If you know some basic phyiscs it be much thoughtful to tell me your design philosophy and based upon what principles.

I need to know how many drills i should have.
How much mass minimum must my ship be.
How to adjust the center of mass based on an active drill.
How much power this is going to take.
Theses are just things to think about as you get started.

If anyone can build a functional world eater that is maintence free I be very happy.

Try stacking like 200 or so drills in a square and connecting them with conveyors, and then get about 50 large reactors with 1-2 titan engines

Wheels and rotors might work.. if you have the patience.

Been working on this for days now to get it right. Currently eats through roids for about 140+ meters. Suprisingly stable, but needs regular maintenance on the carrier/pipes.

Ive tired to make a mining ship with rotor pistons. Din't work out at all lol. Regular pistons worked better. I made a drill about the same length. Ive managed to make it almost without maintence. But thats not what im looking for :3

I wanna see if its possible to build a single "drill". That would eat and entire asteroid. I dont care if it takes 2 hours to consume the asteriod.

Could you show me screenshots? Design blueprint? How would this work without maintence

Very well designed. Is there anyway of making a drill twice as big, or a multistaged drill twice as powerful?

I built an asteroid eating mining ship. Its an ugly beast but the entire front is just covered with drills which are stacked like a pyramid. It is also completely connected to conveyers, refineries and connectors so it can process the ore, refine it, and then send it over to cargo ships.

I made one like an inverse pyramid using around 700 drill bits plumbed together with 8 refineries, could fit about half an asteroid in it. Then had the rest of the ship behind it looks a little silly, kind of the the Icarus from the movie sunshine. Worked ok. Used to break the outside drills often tho

Could you send me a link to the workshop. Im intersted in seeing this ;)

Sadly that save game was corrupted, sorry

Ships with a rotating front, like a fan blade, can cover much larger areas but they tend to be more fickle and don't work in MP.

Is the point of this huge asteriod eating ship just for concept or practical use. Because Practically speaking it's not practical to have a ship that eats whole asteriods. You either use some type of rotor blade which don't work in MP due to ♥♥♥♥♥♥ net code. Or you have a front end that has so many drills it lags or crashes the server when activated.

I built a nice large mining ship with about 170 drills, 16 Refineries, 16 assemblers, 2 Medbays and couple dozen cargo containers. The ship could go right through asteriods and within 2-3 hours I'd mine several million iron and tens of thousands of all other ores.

It wouldn't eat whole asteriods, because frankly that's over kill, but it did carve large holes in them.

This is what I have been doing..

Built this on the bottom side of my platform so no buildings would be in the way. I use a gravity gen to reverse gravity and set my connectors on throw out to drop the ore into a series of collectors, from there everything is conveyor fed to my refineries.

A practical asteriod eater would be nice.

I understand why people make these things. But sadly they just seem impractical to me. If you have the resources to make something that large, then you don't need to make something that large. And the time required to refine that much ore and make it into something... just leads me to think that this game needs a lot more polish.

From my first steps...didn t manage to work it ,cause low frame speed.http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=226186189
