Ambient Lighting Needs To Go!
As a SE fan that has been here since nearly the very beginning, it is very upsetting that something so simple can be so gamebreaking for me. KSH claims that the reason that they added this in was for "Gameplay reasons" I.e. people were finding it too hard to build ships in the total darkness of planets and asteroids. Part of the experience of playing this game is the fact that lighting in ships, stations, and asteriods gave each creation it's own style and feel, from eerie and hostile to clean and welcoming. Now, everything that should be in total darkness is so bright that ship lights, as well as the actual headlamp the dev's have given us (to combat the darkness) are totally obsolete and pointless. Not only that, but lights just look ugly now, and nothing looks right. Why can't we just remove the ambient light (or at least give us a working option to turn it off ourselves) and just keep the natural light of the in-game sun?

I actually had a fix for this, and I was happy. But then this most-recent update happened, breaking my fix, and I'm butthurt as hell about it.

1- Go to >
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\SpaceEngineers\Content\Data

2- Find and Open the ''Environment.sbc'' file with the Notepad

3- Got to that line '' <BackLightIntensity1>0.23</BackLightIntensity1> ''

4- change 0.23 to 0 > that's very dark!

5- Save and exit the file

This value may change after an update, so you'll have to set it back.
I did this yesterday after the update, it worked in the Stable Version.

Other than that you may try this:

Yes. They need to make the realistic lighting. It's sad that the kiddies are crying about the darkness. Current lighting is just not realistic. They should just return the realistic darkness and don't hear of these blind cows. The darknes is also an element of survival too. It doesn't make sense to make the game realistic and add arcade elements

I am totaly with your opinion. Example in the Update Video of the DEV 1.150 with Jan Hloušek at minute 1:50 (https://youtu.be/-VKfi7DxiA0). In creative it might be ok, if you like it. But in Survival you shouldn't be able to see anything outside your helmet within 1cm distance.
It should be pitch black in there. But there is light out of nowhere.

Even on any Voxel Object (e.g. Earth) deep underground / within you can see perfectly well.
In creative? ok. In Survival? Only the first... let's say 20m into the cave.

Maybye Keen might implement after their fancy realistic Sounds Update
(good work, but i rather like the arcade setting, or it is too quiet)
a "Realisic Lightning" Switch for worlds. Especially for Survival Worlds.
I don't realy want to edit files after a update, witch replaces the *.sbc files.

e.g.: Ambient light in dark worlds (do you see the tree?)

You guys may found it nice to drill into a pitch black hole while you crash the back of your ship because you can't see ♥♥♥♥ there. Others don't. They said this is moddable. So what is this drama all about?

I like ambient lighting. But it kills my fps, an option to turn it on and off would be nice.

If it's moddable, then the default should be realistic behavior, wherein a deep hole in the ground is dark and lights actually serve a purpose.

The mod should be the dayglow everything ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ for people who don't want to bother with lights.

Well, then I suggest you to use flashlight, lamps and projectors... :steamfacepalm: What you think they are for...?

darkness should be the default and brigthness a mod or game setting, indeed.
but guess what, the people that wants realism are the less. Casual players want the night as bright as the day, this is how they ruined Minecraft total dark scary creepy pitch black night.
Anyways... installing a darkness mod is very easy

you don't understand, is not about not seeing s*t. is about using the lights, spotlights, a reason for them to exist. And the immersion is way more deep when lights are actually usefull for something and not jsut decoration

For draining the batteries i guess? I mean, if i have to place a few of them for every direction to be able to see enough in caves, it does need a lot of space and drains power.

I mean, back then when they indroduced DX11 there where a time when it was pitch black in asteroids also. And i found this very annoying even if it may be realistic.

If you like to spam lights all over your ship and on your base to enlighten the night, im fine with it. It is moddable, and i would even understand a suggestion to the devs to change the default settings. But to ask for removal of the ambient lightning is a bit arrogant imho.

I don't know what nuclear lamps you are using, but my ship with many lamps used only 2% of energy. You just kidding here -)

Wow so you have to mod in the lighting the way it used to be? that sucks >.<

+1 and agree with OP

Lighting needs to be either dark by default and let modders brighten it up, or have the 2 settings like sound ralistic and arcade. On the bright side (hehe get it :D *hangs head in shame*) if you go into a camera view at night you still need lights.

I know, I have just been ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about it for more than 2 years, and ever since DX9 went off support.
