Maybe by changing the words "light" for "heavy" in the Bp files but I recommend to test with copies to avoid losing the original if you try.
If you build a ship with Heavy Armor Blocks you will see that its too heavy to move....... now you need a mod to increase thruster power, another mod for this and that, it doesnt matter because if your using MODS then the mods like the Atlas Super Laser make heavy armor block a waist as that weapon will destroy your ship reguardless of blocks, mods, modded shields with upgrades.
What Space Engineers needs to make an even lighter weight Aluminum Block so that we can decorate our ships without weighing them down..... this is something I would be willing to pay for.
I agree there should be some way to swap light armor for heavy throughout a BP without having to do it manually. Although if you only wanted some of the blocks to be heavy (the outer hull, for example) while keeping light blocks for the internal structure, that would still require manual replacement.
Another thing I'd like to see is the ability in Survival to change a block from light to heavy by welding in the additional components without removing and replacing the block. (Similar to the Upgrade function in Empyrion). This would save time from not having to select the shape/rotation for each block, just go along a wall with a welder and you're done.
One thing I like to do is place it just in the spots that are going to be hit.. Corners, Bow, etc..
My real world boat building experience has led me to use heavy armor as frames, which actually works pretty well.
While grids are not affected by forces like torsion or shear; I do find that having frames really actually helps to keep missiles and bullets out, and adds lots of collision strength. Ships with frames seem more able to survive catastrophic damage
(If you are in single player survival you can toggle creative mode on with space masters alt+f10 under "Admin Tools" and check "Enable Creative Mode Tools")
I use a text editor that has a replace feature to swap light and heavy armor blocks for blueprints fairly quickly. You can even use notepad to do it, only downside with notepad is it doesn't give you a confirmation or a count of the strings replaced.
1. Open your blueprints folder %appdata%\SpaceEngineers\Blueprints\local\
2. Copy and paste the folder of the blueprint then open the copied folder. (Make changes to the copy so you don't mess up your original)
3. Delete any files named bp.sbcB? where ? is a number like bp.sbcB5. You should now only have bp.sbc and thumb.png in the folder.
4. Edit the bp.sbc file with your preferred text editor and replace "LargeBlockArmor" with "LargeHeavyBlockArmor". Swap the replace text strings to switch heavy to light.
5. Don't forget to save your file, otherwise you'll have to repeat step 3.
The replace features are typically under edit or search on the file menu in the editor.
