Watching real world movies on LCD is it possible?
I'm making a luxury exploration ship and it's design has a TV/movie screen in the interior of the ship.

Are there any scripts already that can do this?

No mods exist that do this. Probably would not be possible.
ShadedMJ Nov 23, 2021 @ 4:08pm
It'd been requested for years, but when asked to justify it there is silence.
The game graphics system would likely crash, but even if it could the resolution and frames would make the movie look like garbage.
How would this _not_ be perverted into stealing movies?

Some people just want to watch Spongebob while they destroy things.

Hi RMazer,
no I don't think it is possible, well I am no Modder but I think we would have it already on the Workshop if it was possible.

I wanted to do a cinema room like in my current "luxurious Mothership" but end up saying to myself that it's not really needed :(

I think one shared a Mod or a Script or Plugin a long time ago where he could enable internet browser on LCD, would have to search the Workshop to see if still available.

Okay.. I'll be the one to say it!
Just imagine the Lag with a ship..
Jack Schitt Nov 23, 2021 @ 6:55pm
That's a cool idea. I haven't seen anything that does this. Right, lag very possible streaming a movie with what Dan found.

If it does work well remember this is a G rated game meant for children. No adult nights.

One told us not so long ago that the camera to LCD plugin is working now so maybe a cool YouTube video will work without lowering the world SimSpeed!?

= Testing needed to know.

I want to address a few questions based off of experience.

I'm going to break the silence for you mate and justify it. The movie wouldn't look like garbage because this has been done years ago already both in Sims games if I recall correctly and also in an mmo called Second Life. Outside of chilling at Star Trek and Star Wars sims my favorite past time when checking that game out was watching movies just because I could in a video game. lol It's kind of neat really.

As for the issue of stealing movies that happens anyway any time you see one of those free streaming web sites. All it really is is a glorified web browser built in to look like a TV. So the content you watch is purely up to you.

Which leads me to this point. The lag. Now the way SL works is it's basically a glorified 3D web browser so lag is a thing in that game. Make no mistake about that. lol So for Space Engineers I would absolutely not recommend turning on the tube while trying to fight or anything else. That is definitely a recreational activity. Meaning park the ship, invite some friends over, and just chill.

The biggest draw back will be the inability to zoom in to the screen so seating positions would be key in order for anyone to really enjoy themselves. Over all I think it's a neat idea and would certainly work best in a single player game. On a server the only issue I could see is being caught off guard to an attack. So be careful. lol:steamthumbsup:

If a modder really wants to impress me they could give me the ability to use my Netflix account and watch my movies that way. That's the one thing I never been able to do in any game. lol Netflix does not play well with others. lol:steammocking:

It's a great idea though for those who want that immersion and realism added in to their game. I'm personally all for it. Anyway hope this sheds some light of the subject. have a good one everybody and stay safe mates.:steamhappy:

This isn't Star Wars or Star Trek or any other game. It's Space Engineers. Neither of the 2 are the same engine, graphics quality, render quality or anything. They play and run completely different than each other.

Camera feeds with the Camera LCD plugin available for this game look pretty good. That plugin is the game graphics being redrawn on the game graphics. It's not real camera quality showing real humans or real scenes in real lighting. It's all computer generated. There's an extremely massive difference between all that being computer generated at a maximum of 24 bits (for the Space Engineers LCD screens) and what a real life camera can do.

They're not the same and can't be compared. Just because one game can do something doesn't mean all games are capable of it.

Can you do a backflip from your feet with no help? Why not? A lot of gymists can so it has to be possible, right? How about touching your right ear with your right elbow? [this] person can so everybody can because they can and because Tv's in Star Trek can play movies.

Do you think you can watch and enjoy a real-life movie in Minecraft's 8 to 16bit graphics? The screens in this game are only a maximum of 24bits.

I assume ShadedMJ was referring to requests made to the devs of this game for such a feature were responded to with silence.

I think the point was lost in translation some where so let me try it this way mate. Everything you said is more or less true. For most things. Not disputing that part. The part I am merely relaying is if it can work flawlessly in an mmo ie Second Life to which I was referring to where you have to actually constantly load your graphics in a viewer that is basically a 3D web browser then it really should not have any performance issues in a game where you have already downloaded the entire game.

You have to render absolutely nothing. You have to download nothing. You have to wait for nothing to load because it is already loaded in all around you in a stable client. The only way you have issues is if you try doing a bunch of stuff while you are running your media at the same exact time. Which is why I recommended doing it the way that I did.

It really ain't about the game engine because regardless of what you use each game uses a certain amount of resources for both the game and the graphics. So ya if you are doing a bunch of stuff while trying to watch TV in your video game then absolutely expect some lag issues. lol That's true of any platform. Doesn't matter the game or game engine my friend.

That having been said if people sit their behinds down and watch their movie then they will have no lag issues. As in at all. Zero. None. Zilch. Nada. Even more so in a game like this because you have the entire game already installed and nothing to download. So the only lag you will experience is based off of your own PC specifications and internet connection.

The server will have nothing to do with that because media only uses what's on the client side. So unless it's modded to run on the entire server which I would not recommend doing then it's pretty much a client only issue. Really it's not much different then running a music stream in your game.

Honestly it's more about people just having the option for immersion then anything else. And why not? In this technical age it is totally doable. It was done decades ago. So it can absolutely be done now.

While I do think it'd be a neat option to have I play this game mostly in single player anyway. It is something I think that would more benefit sever communities on here for something recreational to do in the game together.

Personally if I want to listen to a music stream while playing then I just run VLC in the background and if I want to watch Netflix then I just log out. lol Either way I still think it's a good idea though. Hope I explained it better. Have a good one and stay safe mate.:steamhappy:

Compare it to a barn door or a shovel if you want. It's not a barn door or a shovel either. It doesn't matter what some other game can do. This isn't that other game.
It's Space Engineers.

Get it yet? No 2 games are exaclty the same. Chickens have wings but they can't fly like a hawk. An apple doesn't taste like an onion. Same thing(s).

Ya man I get it. You don't seem to or you just don't want to hear it and I am sorry about that. I don't know how else to break it down to you any other way. Keep telling you it doesn't matter. I told you what did. Playing media on a texture in a game is not rocket science.:steamfacepalm:

Maybe scripting a player is, but the basic concepts of how they work are not. For someone who said they were for it you sound pretty against it to me though. lol Seems what we have here is a failure to communicate and it appears to me that you just want to be right so I am just going to let you be right then. lol Cheers mate. lol:steamthumbsup::steamhappy:

Even if it did manage to work, I doubt it would be even a good quality to even watch. It would probably look something like this:
