None of the DLCs are really essential to gameplay.

No DLC is needed, if you want your ships/bases to have themes then yeah get some of them like the Industrial or warfare packs, but If I built 2 ships one with DLC and one without using the same frame and number of blocks the former would likely look nicer but there would be no performance improvements.

3000+ hours with no DLC. The DLC are intended to be cosmetic not functional. If your focus is making things look pretty, then all of them. If you are satisfied with just things that work, then none of them.

If they were, then it would be pay_to_win on multiplayer, which is to be avoided.

Some do contain new blocks, but as far as I'm aware, the only one that has content locked behind a DLC is the economy one--its got a storeblock or something that I think isn't available in base. (unless that was changed? I know there was a public outcry about it)

Nothing in the DLC's will make your ship more powerful. They're building conveniences like an offset door (looks nicer), catwalks, and reskinned atmospheric thrusters.

Hi, not essential to gameplay but the "Industrial cockpit" (from Decorative Pack) is very cool adding tho "restricted" on its conveyor port positions :

Keen has done a very good job as far as DLCs not being essential to gameplay.

The blocks out of the DLC I use most would be the DLC catwalks, grated stairs. and railings out of Decorative Pack #2. They bring a lot of "real" as far as the feel of a large build.

The blocks I feel compelled to use the most would be the beds, toilets, and showers. They serve absolutely no unique functional service. You can put down a seat and get the same results. But again, making space for them brings out the "real" in my own designs.

I wish the industrial cockpit was vanilla. I build a lot of pure vanilla, non-DLC/MOD ships and stations; that's the one block I use a lot.

I use the different styles of catwalks to add texture to my large grid builds. I've recently really fallen in love with the helm.

Idk how anyone can play without dlc, EVERY dlc is good for decorations and you cant make a really fashion ship/base/car without them. The price is very low, so just buy everytning and enjoy lol

I agree that the combination of Keen's monopoly on detailed starship building+combat/survival and the low individual costs of the DLCs make them a very justifiable purchase.

If you wanna be able to fully repair npcs ships you take over the "Decorative Pack" is a must. So many of the npc ships use things from it.

Decorative Pack #2 Ain't bad either. It has lots of useful stuff like windows, railings, grated catwalks. Freight can be useful if you can't build normal storage containers, but generally I never do.

If you wanna 100% the achivements you need Frostbite or someone with it. The antenna dish from it ain't bad looking either
