Steam thinks game is still running, but it isn't.
I honestly don't know what to say here.

After playing singleplayer for a good 4 hours. I close the game and... while the game does disappear from my screen and spaceengineers.exe gets unloaded from memory and the process getting killed.
Steam still thinks that the game is running somehow.

Press the stop button on steam, nothing happens.
I try to close down steam normally, says its waiting for Space engineers to stop.

for sake of argument: I have steam cloud disabled, dedicated server isn't even installed.
I checked the resource monitor and steam (or any associated processes) isn't touching any files associated with Space engineers be it in the steamapps folder or the Space engineers folder in Appdata. nor is there any instance of SpaceEngineers.exe.

Only thing I can do is terminate steam through task manager to snap it out of whatever moronic it picked up from running the game.
I've even tried deleting the cfg file in Appdata and the shader cache folder without success.

anyone know how to fix this issue? I tried to look but couldn't find anything that relates to my situation. the issue is a bit to ambiguous to search properly

Hi, it takes a bit more time to close for me too when I play 4 hours and more but +/- 60 seconds and it's closed in steam library, I see : running, + synchronizing, + validating, + closing and back to normal.

I can tell I see some from time to time reporting similar problems while all good for a lot and I am still not sure on the cause.

Steam app may just need to reinstall over wihtout uninstalling it!?
-> doing so avoids uninstalling all games cause it just install Steam app over.
(Download Steam exe installer and double click on it to start the install)

Well may be worth to try since you said SE was not in the process, so a Steam "bug" maybe?

To compare, share your install Dir.
-> for example, mine = Steam and SE are installed on the C: Drive.
+ I have 2 x 1T Hard drives = C: and D:

I see that behavior from other games as well, in cases where I have the steam cloud enabled. but as I mentioned I have the steam cloud disabled for space engineers as my blueprints alone are well over the space limitation of the steam cloud anyways.

and steam has been saying thats its been running for the last half hour or so.

I had a fresh install of my whole PC including steam just last week so I doubt that's it.

Doubt this matters but Steam and SE are installed on E drive.
C: = 500 GB SSD sataII
D: = 2TB HDD sataII
E: = 1TB SSD PCIE
all 3 drives have roughly 50% free space, give or take 2% in either direction.

Yes it should be Ok on any Drives,
just so I can have more clues cause another member having similar problem was using USB Drives... it's more for me to find similarity between gamers having the same problem ;)

Another thing you could share is the PC specs, to compare, the other member was using AMD Rysen 9 5990X on a ASUS Dark Hero with 32GB

Nothing similar with the other member so far.

The most common I found on the Web =

1- Make sure to run Steam as an administrator the next time you launch it, as this should help you avoid some other, smaller problems.

2 - I went to Steam’s website and re-downloaded the Steam client. I reinstalled it to fix the problem.

+
All said they had to Kill Steam process first.

As I pointed out in my initial post to this topic; Spaceengineers.exe gets unloaded from memory and the process getting killed.
Steam still thinks that the game is running somehow.

can't stop a process that doesn't exist.

I have the same problem, only the game won't start. When I turn on the game, there is no process in the task manager. Only after closing Steam, the task appears and can be disabled.
Go into task manager (CTRL+ALT+DELETE). If the SE application isn't running, go into SERVICES and make sure it isn't still running there either. Sometimes it can get hung-up.

Yeah I disabled the steam overlay and that seems to have fixed the issue.
