Ship welders cant weld DLC blocks
Solved!

If your welders are aligned, and everything SHOULD be working (projection aligned with welders, nothing obstructing projection, you own the DLC blocks you are trying to print, etc) make sure to OWN the grid doing the welding, or the DLC blocks will not weld. This bug doesn't occur when welding vanilla blocks.

Thanks to Dan2D3D for helping me diagnose this one!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Been working on carrier ships that can print small grid ships. I usually use vanilla blocks exclusively, but I've been touching up older designs with newer blocks and uh...

It seems you cant use welder blocks to weld DLC blocks... Is there any particular reason why?

It's not an issue of not owning the DLC, I have it. Its not a Progression issue either, I've tested it. I just cant print these specific blocks, and have to weld it manually.

After a bit of snooping, I can find some old reddit posts and even long forgotten steam threads by players who were also unable to weld DLC blocks, problem is, there's no suggestions in those threads that mitigate this or work around it.

Has Keen Software ever addressed this particular issue? It makes automation a lot stricter.
Seems odd a bug or an oversight this easy to notice has been in the game this long.

Is this a server or solo game?
Is the DLC block a projection?
Sure the welder is working?
Is it a specific DLC block or all DLC blocks?

I don't have any DLC so I can't investigate this myself.

Hi, that looks like a bug cause it should work.

Have you veified the community reports ?

Note

Always verify the community reports on the Portal because more than A Lot are participating in the making of the game by reporting all Bugs they find so the bug or feedback may already be in with good information from the SE Devs.

(create "Bug report" or "Request help"(Private) or "Feedback"(Petition) on the Portal)

I will try on my side, too and feedback here if working or not.

You may share a save with bug in ready for testing here so me and Veteran players can help find the cause.

Just publish a bugged save on the Workshop and paste the item link here.

I'll use the support link later, but I'm certain veteran players have also noticed this.
Like I mentioned this has been an issue for several years judging by several threads here and on reddit.

The game is not the same now and the SE programmer told the community to report, but my offer still stands so you can share a bugged save ready for me to test the bug you found.

= I will send it to the SE programmers in my monthly report.

Testing done on my side = Seems to work very well.

Testing details :

I've used my new building station with small ship welder on moving arm, loaded a large block Bp containing 3 DLC blocks and I was able to build with the needed resources :
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2760856220

Conclusion = it looks like a bug in specifc save and you will have to send that save to the SE programmers for testing.

This is somewhat useful, proves you can use a small grid welder to weld large grid DLC blocks, but my issue is the opposite.

I'm welding small grid ships from inside a large grid ship, and the dlc blocks fail to weld. I have not tested if small grid welders would weld another small grid properly because I assume they will. My issue is that large grid welders can print every part of my ship properly only if it's a vanilla block.

I will provide pictures from a new save file later after work

That is why it is very very important to send that "bugged" save for testing.

= Because I may test all on my side and will never see that bug while it is in one of your saves ready to share.

= Problem in specific situation / specific save.

heres a save with instructions. I made a small grid to test and it can print properly, but as the instructions will suggest, you can go in the hangar I made and see the DLC blocks fail to weld.

if you like, you can even detatch the ship, press the projector on the mk II Egret, and land it on the welding pad on top of the hangar, and see the blocks still fail to weld with those other welders.

Got it, I will test later cause busy atm, and will feedback to confirm if you can send it to the SE programmers or not.

Testing done = Large welder can build DLC blocks, it was just a "Bad concept".

Details :

1 - First thing I have noticed is the Projector was not connected to the Blueprint, there was missing blocks so the Bp can't be build :
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2761629534
-> I have added those missing blocks (see yellow blocks in second screenshot below)
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2761655834

2 - Deleted the windows in front of the large block welders because they were colliding when building blocks and the main ship starts to move by itself.

3 - I did not used your printing buttons in my second try, I have added the pistons to cockpit toolbar to move those one at time and very slowly to build the Blueprint ship.

4 - I have noticed that some armor blocks are not build when pistons retract too fast so I completed with hand welder.

Conclusion = No need to report as a bug.

Oh! Another thing I have noticed is some blocks were not yours, they were set to 'Nobody" and better set all blocks to "ME" to avoid ownership problems.

Edit

How to set all blocks to "ME" :

1 - Open control panel of ship terminal.

2 - Select one block in the left list (highlighted).

3 - Hit Ctrl+A = that will select all blocks in the left list.

4 - Change ownership to "ME" on the right side.
