Moons, and their worthiness?
Something I'm not used to is sustained operations on a lunar surface.

On standard planets an Atmo thruster is fine.

In space, Ions do the job as long as you don't enter a decaying orbit.

But the moon is... weird. Without Atmo, and without thruster components, you are limited to Hydrogen. And while that's normally fine what with the ice fields, you very often have to come back to refill; or go on ballistic trajectories and try to brake at the last second in order for your mining/cargo trips to be economical.

You could go the rover approach I guess, but then you'd be... using a rover. A vehicle that has to contend with uneven lumpy craters, and can't fly up to dock with the connectors on more permanent processing facilities.

I'm questioning whether it's worth staying on a moon, vs leaving as soon as possible to find Ion Thruster friendly environments. It's nice and localized, sure, but it's just so awkward to use.

Hi, the Earth Moon got one of the Rich ore spot of the game and the place I start when I go survival cause I can build all blocks very early.

Rich ore spot = Where all ores can be found very close to each other.

Go explore its huge flat area, the Rich ore spot is on the "Dark side edge" close to ice Pole.

I can give this one but will let you find the other Rich ore spots :

Earth Moon ice Pole next to "Dark side" edge

Oh! And I use Ion thrusters on the Moon, it just need a bit more upwards.

I forgot, in case you don't know how to use GPS coords :

Select a complete GPS line and copy/paste in-game to use and find.
(Crtl+C / Ctrl+V in Text Panel will add to GPS Tab auto but hidden)

I typically set up an asteroid base instead of being on a planet or moon. Sure, you need air, but resources in space are plentiful. But it's all about personal choice.

Are those coordinates constant on Solar System moon starts?
Dan2D3D  [developer] Feb 7, 2022 @ 10:49am
Yes, the world is the same when we create new, those are the default Premade worlds all the same,
but we can create new premade worlds with our Fav settings, Fav Mods, Paste in new planets/asteroids and more... so to create new different worlds to play in.

Info +

The local Premade worlds all have the same "Seed" number in the files but server admins can change that "Seed" number so the ores may not be at the same GPS coords.

Coordinates in the Star System map doesn't change. Asteroids will always spawn at the same locations with the same ores every time because the spawning "seed" is constant. As such, locations mapped for ore locations will always be there. For example, here's a link to uranium ore maps near planets and moons that can be useful if you're getting frustrated trying to find the stuff.

Depends on WHICH moon you are talking about. Earth's moon has zero atmosphere. So it's Ion thrusters only. But the low gravity means ions are doable but with a few more UP thrusters than in free space. The other moons have atmospheres that you can use atmospherics on. The atmospheres are thin but gravity is low enough that most atmospheric vehicles will work on them.

Moons are low gravity with tiny gravity wells compared to planets. So mining them is a lot easier than true planets. I like flying a mothership juts outside of the gravity well and sending down a ship or a couple of ships that can mine and get back up to the mothership... a lot less effort than a planet.

So moons are useful.
