Rover wants to tilt forward everytime I brake ?

The center of mass seems good. Why does it want to flip itself ? Tried going down a steep slope, and the thing came tumbling down

Center of mass is too high and the wheelbase is too short. Try using <S> to decelerate before using <Spacebar> to brake.

EDIT: another option is to drive very slow :) I have similar problems on most of my small grid vehicles. I spend a lot of time using <S> going down hills and before I brake.

Yes, but it wants to tilt forward pressing "S". And going very slow, I'm not sure. How do I prevent the rover gaining speed ? It's like 60% slope I need to go down

As above, the centre of mass is too high and you need to widen the wheel base, also go into the K menu and select all your wheels at once and change the max speed to around 60 instead of 180 you won't generally need to be running at high speed (more so with terrain issues) and this should help somewhat.

Extend the wheel base by how much do you think ?
WheelChock May 1, 2021 @ 10:13am
As frag2k4 mentioned, lower the top speed setting on your wheels.

Maybe a forward facing thruster to help decelerate?

Going down a 50-60 degree slope, I would keep my speed under 20 m/s using <S>. And yes, it will still tilt a little forward when you do that. You are fighting the natural forces of momentum and gravity.

Play around in a creative mode world. Maybe make a save of your current world, and edit that to be creative. Then you can alter your design to find something that works a little better for you.

I usually try to make the distance between the front and rear axles twice the height. So if the vehicle is 8 blocks high, it is 16 blocks or more between the two axles. Lowering the Center of mass may not be possible.

Alright. I'll make the rover longer. I see there's a Driver Assist Script in the workshop, would that help ?
WheelChock May 1, 2021 @ 11:53am
DAS? It may. I use it and it DOES have an option to assist with downhill braking:

bool _UseHillDescentControl=true

It doesn't work well for me, but then my vehicles are over 80k kgs. Your mileage may vary :) I would try it in that creative mode game to see if it works as you expect. Many options you can set, so edit carefully.

You could also turn off breaking on your front wheels, that helps some.

Have breaking ONLY on your rear wheels and problem solved.

Hi, try by adding more strength on the front wheels and more mass on the back, add blast door blocks like a back bumper or replace the existing blocks (on the back) by heavy armor till the "ilt forward" stops.

Picture just for reference: You can eyeball this... I just wanted the image to show what I'm talking about.

Get your rover on a flat surface & check the angle between ground contact on the front wheel & the center of mass. (it's the angle I've marked with the star).

The smaller that angle is the better. if it's bigger than 45 degrees you've got trouble & the rover won't be very stable. Ideally you should try and get it down to about 30 degrees.

You can lengthen the wheelbase (and I would definitely advise that you do that). You can tweak the suspension settings (reducing friction (particularly on the front wheels) will make the braking less harsh).
You can also use heavier blocks to construct the lower and rear portions of the chassis. Blast door blocks & heavy armour blocks can really shift the center of gravity then applied in the right places.

Best way to add weight and lower the center of gravity is to have the lowest part of the vehicle made of heavy armor blocks. Heavy armor will also limit the damage you take if the rover bottoms out.

Design is your issue.

I agree, like herrchaftg35 said, you have a design issue, not a mechanical problem.

Right... There's the front wheel brakes to turn off. Adding more weight to the bottom might not be possible. I want to limit myself to small grids until I can reach one of those NPC trading stations, but I spawned in the mountains so there's some terrain crossing to limp trough... Why a rover ? I'm pretty sure I can't get the required mats from the "loot box" to make enough thrusters so I can safely fly...

Actually you MIGHT be able to.

Some of them have thrusters which don't scrap if you can get to them quickly enough.

Just the one thruster, mind you, but if you rig up a single thruster, Gyro air scooter, you could probably traverse the world very quickly.

Slowing down and landing would be a problem since you can't visualize the velocity, but that's part of the "fun" I guess.
