i had the same thing happen to me i ended up using small bits 2 blocks apart horizontal

The drill that I did it with was a full wall of 60 drills, no empty spaces. all facing forward. I don't get what you mean about the "small bits". I don't get these random pieces left behind making drill walls like that often, only rarely. Are you saying you've found that using less drills seems to prevent this?
where the large block drill bits (for me) left stone pieces behind even if it was a straight wall of them.
