Anyone have a tried and true method of judging the gravity well on planets?
Now for the most part this is really a non-issue, but every now and then when I am not paying attention...

I normally go for 50km above my target for planets, and 5km over moons - safe right? Well say I am traveling between my moon base, and planet (Earth Like) base and put the ship on cruise control and held to the food replicator. I find that I slighty missed judged my trajectory and my capital ship has scratched the gravity well, and she is sinking (nothing but ion). I burn through mass amounts of fuel to get her back up to zero G.

I suppose there may be a script out there somewhere that could help -what's your approach to a planet orbit? I know, I know - you don't actually orbit as the planets don't move - just go with me here.

I think it depends on the size of the planet. Like alien being bigger has more gravity that reaches further than the earth like one.

I'm not sure I understand the question. Doesn't the hud show you the gravitational pull? Last time someone asked about where 1G was on Earth I found it at ~700m.

don't really have a tried and true method, just gut feelin and luck.

as for the sinking my truely large ships have an upward gravity well/mass drive just for those occasions when I skip into atmos.

Yes, it does and if I am sitting in the Capt's Chair all is good, it's those occasion when I have to visit the WC or some other biological need.

That really sounds kind of cool, got a link you can share. I think I would like to read up on makeing one of those. Is it just a grav drive pointing up (providing lift)?

Very good, next refit at the space port, it's going in.

Next time just stop at WC. It those "other biological needs" that make me go AHHHHHHHHHHHH TMI TMI :steamhappy:

ya dont need a uber drive

just imagine the ship pulling itself up just enough to "lower" the mass planet gravity can pull on. might look into boyancy formulas....

btw..If ye look into trek blueprints they use gravity wells the exact same way.
