Lightning just destroyed like...all of everything
Being brand new, I've been watching tons of videos, reading lots of how-to's etc, finally got a start of a base up, nighttime just rolled around, a storm came with it, and lightning just took out all I've done so far. I'm only four hours in here, but goddang that's a little rough.
Its still going, lightning is still crashing around me here, just waiting for me to build something else, I guess.

I don't see any kind of lightning rod...is there something you can use towards that end?

It doesn't make much sense otherwise....to introduce a mechanic for which there is no solution other than to simply hope a storm doesn't come around? Seems so...pointless, really. Any help would be appreciated here...is there anything that can be done?

@EmberStar

A lot have asked for more options on the weather and that is what I reported 7 days ago and I recommended to all do the same so I will not be alone reporting.

Some already sent feedbacks to the SE team tho all new ones are very welcome to help :selike:

Go play at the easy Biomes then, well till we get a change on that.

Additionally, the "easy" biomes are limited to... what, Deserts on Earthlike, and basically nothing on Mars and Alien? So nice that the best "workaround" for official / no mod servers renders almost all planet surfaces unusable. At that point you might as well start on the Moon or in the Space Pod and just skip planets entirely.

Even without lightning, weather adds almost no positive features. Like two kinds boost wind turbine output, nearly everything else nukes wind or solar or both. And way, way too many drop visibility to levels that makes any kind of flight suicidal, doubly so at night.
Keep in mind that a lot are participating and the Devs goes with their feedbacks on the Portal and by Email so don't be shy to send yours, too.

Part of the reason that I'm so annoyed is that I *WANT* weather to be a cool new feature worth having enabled. But in the current form it's almost all negatives - reduced visibility, reduced power output, increased chance of random unstoppable DEATH when lighting turns your small mining ship into a collection of scrap metal and random parts. Only a couple types have any actual benefit, and only for wind turbines - solar is limited to a range between "no effect" and "nearly complete shutoff," which isn't good when solar is already almost useless if you have access to wind.
I like the rays as they are, the problem with the climate is the mist that enters my surroundings and makes it impossible to work!

But I wanted an expansion with tornadoes, earthquakes and more cataclysmic events! HAhahaha:Uranium:
So far I'm liking the weather. In the save I've been playing since the update, I have had little issue with it. Even before the hot fix I've yet to actually be hit with lightning. Pre-hot fix I had 2 wind turbines slightly damaged, four armor block destroyed, and a post knocked down. Since the hot fix, and putting up a decoy post, I've barely had anything, until a heavy thunderstorm last night damaged 2 more wind turbine, and the antenna on the ship I was working on. So now I'm putting up another decoy post or two ;)

So far I had more damaged done by the 3 meteors that hit my outpost then lightning..
A lot wanted hostile environments to give a reason to move and have harder Biomes and the Devs decided to add the Thunderstorms at specific areas and it was not perfect in the first update and it should get better if a lot are asking for it.

A few have asked here on Steam about being able to play where there is Thunderstorms, we got some changes already and may see more in the future.
^ Theres an LCD encoding now that tells you what weather is currently transpiring. Lessons learnt from IRL: why are you outside in a great big flat area when there's lightning outside? You do remember lightning damages everything not properly grounded right? Planes do not fly through lightning storms for various reasons...?

Deserts are great, lots of wind. Can't see much during dust storms, but now have reason to use spotlights in creations again.

Planes don't fly through lightning storms mostly because of turbulence. Planes actually get hit by lightning all the time, the damage it does is minimal (if any.)

And players are outside during lightning because at the moment, it happens basically ALL THE TIME in some areas. And unlike real lightning, the stuff in game specifically targets players. My limited experience is that it will target the player if there isn't a grid within a certain distance. If it has a choice of multiple grids, it will ALWAYS target small grids first, regardless of if other grids are taller or equipped with decoys. Before I turned it off, I had lightning *repeatedly* decimate small grid ships that were basically parked UNDER a large grid decoy. Large grid decoy - untouched. Small ship - gutted.

Again, in its current implementation, the weather sucks. All drawbacks, no benefits. Do yourself a favor and turn it off. On official servers, use a deep space start.
From the Official Guide, Thunderstorms :

Thunderstorms can spawn on Earthlike and Alien. Thunderstorms are arguably the most dangerous weather for grids, though damage can be prevented if you know your stuff. Lightning in thunderstorms has a low chance of hitting your grid or player, if it hits your grid, you may want to have a decoy in place. Decoys are the lightning rod of SE, antennas will be struck if you do not have one. If you don't have a decoy or antenna, a random functional block will be struck with lightning. You can also prevent any lightning from hitting your grid by moving underground.

>> it's just 2 planets that have Lightnings in specific Biomes :

Earthlike
Thunderstorms spawns everywhere but deserts and snowy biomes.

Alien
Thunderstorms spawn everywhere but snowy/icy biomes.

+

So 3 Moons + Mars and Triton are OK (no lightnings) + deserts and snowy biomes

...There are numerous reasons than just turbulence, aside from just dealing with static build up amongst other things when it comes to flying aircraft through any weather system. My experience with lightning to date points more so to a lack of application of concepts that players would pursue in a real world environment.

As has been mentioned in numerous areas, including the previous post, lightning tends to occur only in specific biomes, and only on specific planets. Considering that the Earthlike Planet has two snowy poles, and has a large band of desert around the middle, I would not consider a lightning storm out-run-able. If you are in early game, perhaps its time to consider a more mobile strategy than before. Or during a primary initial relocation when deciding where to build a base, on landing with the small lander provided, consider where on the planet you are currently located and potential hostile effects not mentioned.

There's DEFINITELY lightning on Titan
@FallenCat

Should not have so you can report this bug to the SE team.

Tho I build a station over there and just encounter light snow, fog and clear weather so far.

Oh! I found a cool "Petition" searching for bug reports on Triton (I did not found any) where members are voting to have lightning hit character on Mars and Titan only and the Devs have added a reaction mark as "Considered" :

https://support.keenswh.com/spaceengineers/pc/topic/lightning-targeting-player-only-on-titanmars

That may be a Petition you would like to vote on :selike:
