Why do I have a ping on my own dedicated server?
I've been running my server for a few weeks now. When I connect, my ping, and other players' ping, is over 100. What could be causing that. If anything, I shouldn't have any ping correct?

Hi, I don't know but maybe share your server setup so all can have something to start with.

Do you use 2 PCs at home?

Or you run the SE Dedic and the game in the same PC?

One PC to do everything. Uses only 18% of CPU. Takes up only 3GB of my 32GB RAM.

Ok, that is good info and may happen only in that specific situation.

I always use 2 PCs and I don't use it much so maybe ask the Veteran server admins in the "help-for-community-servers" on Keen Discord, one surely knows cause he tried!?

They are very kind and have A Lot of XP with servers so I am sure one will be able to help you on this one better than I that uses 2 PCs.

Running a server on the same machine that you play on... has been noted to be a NOT GOOD thing in the past. If you must use one machine for everything, then have others join your own game directly, without the dedicated server.

I was using one PC the very First time I tried the SE Dedic (a long time ago) and I was having very strange "bugs" so I can confim because it splits the CPU in 2 so half for the server and half for the game and may not work well in all PCs > like my CPU is lower than the recommended and having a hard time to run 2 apps in same time.

I would love to do that but then that means I have to leave the game on at all times :/

Are you connecting through steam server menu, in-game menu, or using the direct ip?

I ran some private servers and my personal lan server before, and depending on how you connect you may be going through steam first to loop back to your own server.

In this case the ping is not you to the server, it is you to whoever your going through and then back again to your server. If all the pings are the same including yours then you are probably going through a steam service and they are the ones who have the high ping back to your local server.

then the alternative would be making a tiny computer for the sole purpose of dedicated server hosting. its an investment yes, but if you wanna be a good host, it isnt gonna be cheap if you want to run a dedicated with minimal issues.

that said, some top end CPU may have the thread count to properly play and host dedicated servers, but thats either gonna be something like a 9900k i9 or a server cpu with 16 cores and 32 threads, usually not ideal for gaming.

not needed at all.. i ran a dedicated server for a couple friends, like OP on a i5 4460 with 8gb ram.

the server uses very little cpu.. it only really needs tons of internet bandwidth and enough ram. so you cant run it over wifi.. it has to be plugged into lan.

ah that is a good mention too, very important.

wi-fi = the worst way to host a server. hard cable or have someone else host.
