Finding cobalt in survival [SOLVED]
Hey guys! I've been playing survival with my friend and we have had a really hard time trying to find cobalt. We realized that spawning on a mountain was a bad spot. Does anyone have any advice for us, as we do not want to restart?

I have an ore detector on my drop pod, base and rover for anyone who was wondering.

EDIT: Found cobalt!

it tends to be a bit deeper on planets. You might want to do this:

The big ore detector has a range of 150m, which is much better than the small one

Thanks for the quick reply! I will watch this.

Best way on planets is usually to build a large grid rover with a large grid ore detector on it, and then just drive around. The large ore detector has a range of 150m so should detect all the available ores nicely even if deeper. Remember to adjust the range up to the max 150m. The default is something smaller IIRC.

I never had problems with finding pockets of cobalt with a small ore detector. But after each load I and jumping into my ship I have to check if the ore detector is still set to maximum 50m. As I noticed it often defaults again to 25m.

You can also use this mod to help you. It only triples the range of the detectors (150 small, 200 large)

I've noticed that happen from time to time.

Placing a GPS Marker where you dug your hole is also a great idea, so you don't lose your hole

Large scanner helps a lot. While connectors add 9000 liters to cargo volume. Just dock on grid and cut if off. Recharge ship battery while docked from wind. There is extra landing leg on top to lock detector in place safely as connectors don't like sudden hits while legs can sustain a lot.
Don't use P after, use G keys for the landing legs instead. To progress tech tree use small grid as much as possible. It doesn't matter which one you complete, but will save a lot of stone digging.

splitsie has great instructional videos!
Depending on which planet you spawn on, on "mars" I fly around with the jetpack and look for ice, use my handheld jackhammer with built in ore detector and I usually find deposits under these.

btw, is your profile pic from an fm-84 cover? I absolutely love synthwave, have seen robert parker, the midnight, sunglasses kid, perturbator, daniel deluxe & timecop1983 live!

Its there, and its closer than you think. Keep going out after signals and mining what you have found. Eventually youl see it, iv found all my ores with my starter rover and small grid scanner :)

Just keep searching. Make sure to leave a GPS Marker at each one you check so you know what you found if anything, and to make sure you're not visiting the same ones over and over and over . . .

This is fkn ridiculous.

It's been 10 hours, I tried everything, scanners, hand scanner, flying around looking for patches then scanning. Made a cart with a small scanner on it and drove everywhere until I flipped over and had to demolish it.

Cobalt is SO FKN RARE I cannot find it and it is blocking my game from progressing.
Without it, no atmospheric thrusters.

Screw this game, this is moronic.

if you find ore spot and see just 1 (or 2) ores, there is something hiding most likely. There are some spots with just 2 ores, but I have yet to see some with just a single ore. Which means dig down 50..70m to see the other one. That will be either silver or cobalt.

Small scanner is useless. Your drill can scan just as good. Driving with slow and small rover is even worse. Jetpack, 2..3 bottles of hydrogen to be on the safer side. And then make control descent.

Well after 11 hours, just after venting my anger, I DID find some cobalt.
So now I finally have a mining ship. Let the real fun begin. Finally.

gg :) Also keep in mind some ore spots might not be that obvious. Like desert hills have a lot of ore on their sides at high elevation. On almost 100% vertical slopes. Ice too btw. Close to surface often, but you have to pass the right spot. I'm not sure about the visual queues as sometimes I think I know them and sometimes there is nothing. Regular mountains probably have some ore too.

Here I actually had Iron and Cobalt 300m from where I landed. Cobalt invisible, but I spotted Iron and one control shaft later I had Cobalt too. And Gold. But since the valley did look funny and I have done a lot of surface jobs already, I went for something rather new for me. It's not that bad with cobalt once you learn the tricks. Half ice, half stone ground is probably hardest to spot something. In those cases I often just move to a different spot or some lake.

I read this, went to the Silver ore deposit i marked with no other ores around, dug down and found cobalt. seriously - one of the best answers, thanks!
