Remote Control : What's up with that?
So I've been messing around in creative a bit to see what I can come up with. I loved the idea of being able to remotely control my ground craft so that I can sit at base and do exploration and mining. However, I just cannot get this thing to work. I install an Antenna, power, Camera, remote box and then set the remote to use the proper cam. Then when I chose to "control" the vehicle it dumps me into the stationary console and won't display my cam view and eventually it won't let me "control" at all it just grays out the button and often tells me it has been disconnected..

You might be out of range of the antenna. Try increasing it. Also you have to set the camera to one of the keybinds I think.

Lol, sounds like you are connected and RCing your rover, just select and view the camera. Just connecting doesn’t turn on the camera view. You have to pick which camera to look through or you’ll just look at the back of your head.

Hope that helps, GL

I know that feel :) Press Shift + K, find the vehicle with the remote control, then select either "control" or "terminal". For easier camera viewing, you can put it's "view" setting in to the vehicle toolbar, then just press the coresponding button.

You're not doing anything wrong - the remote control thing is just bugged to hell right now. There are several known problems with it & a lot of people have reported.
You've obviously seen how these bugs work but just to confirm what you're seeing...

The main bug is getting kicked out of control. Everyone is experiencing this, it's not just you. It's been a thing for a month or more now. Started around the time of the first beta test if I'm not mistaken.
If you're controlling a ship remotely & hit T (control panel) it'll kick you out of control & say you're not connected, even though you still need to press F (action) to exit control before you can do anything else.

Another is that sometimes even though a ship has Antenna, RC block, power and all ownership is set correctly, the "control" button may still be greyed out - then you try again a few seconds later & it works fine - then next time it goes back to not working.
This one seems to come & go at random.

I imagine these bugs will get fixed in tomorrows update. Fingers crossed.

Oh - and another bug you might be seeing...
In the CP for the Remote Control block you can set a "designated camera".
Designating a camera is *supposed* to automatically switch to that cameras feed when you enter control of the RC block...
Approx half the time it doesn't work.

Long as I know its mostly bugs lol. I really hoped that would work.... Though I hope they would put in tractor beams too..lol

That does look very cool. I hope it'll be updated to fit the new update coming today!

One report about the remote is in fixing progress, some are marked "Considered" so that means it just needs votes on to push the fixing priority on those.

Using the Bug report search tool gives =

Last time I tested it was working very well in space, even added ships on Patrol.

I will try again next time I go in :approve:

My issue maybe not knowing exactly how it is supposed to work. I just know I built a small ground mining car, installed cameras and installed what I understood was needed. I cranked up its range to max then tried to remotely drive. The results were either 1. It would keep telling me it disconnected or 2. The remote would kinda work but it wouldn't let me connect to the cameras.

Did you put the cam on the remote blocks hotbar?

Think of the rc block as just another cockpit with its own actions and stuff. If you want to use a cam you have to either go into the control pannel or use a hotbar action after taking contol.

Besides that is there an antenna on the rover?

Are you sitting at a base to control it and does that base have an antenna?

If you connect via your suit range is only 250m so it will dc quickly.

So basically you need to have antenna on it and antenna on where you sit when you use it :)

It should work by default with no settings, we just need a remote control + antenna on the ship + Large antenna on station or large mothership to have a wider antenna range.

I always add the keys to the Remote control toolbar and hit the camera view, I never used the "assigned camera" before but I just tried and it worked, well for this short test I've just done.

Maybe save with your character in front of the ship to control and share this world on the Workshop for all to try and I will try to fix it for you. (No Mods tho!)

If you're using mods, especially scripts, check to make sure they're current.

My hope is that the modding community will work harder at keeping things updated once we launch because the devs will be doing less monkeying with the code
