Automated ship building
I've seen several scenes in the intro that show ships being built automatically. One I can ...kinda understand? Just welders bouncing up and down to build a ship while it's spinning. I get like half of that. Don't quite grasp how it works completely though. The other is just magically being built at lightning speed without any frames. Can anyone explain the wizardry going on in those two scenes? Mods?

Well that shaking part on the welders had two purposes:

first one - just for a dramatic effect - aka it looked cool and entertaining, so in esscence it was for a dramatic show :)

the second one - the one more tangible - if welders were just stationary they might have not reached all the blocks on the projected design - and that would leave unwelded blocks - or outright holes in the ship - so making the welders move - kinda increased their range of operation - and that translated to fewer welders needed to make smth.

As for the two modes you mentioned -> if the blocks just appeared outright - that would mean the welding was done in creative mode -> this would mean any block that was welded would imm be done without any need for parts just poof and its there - completed -> the creative mode is very usefull for learning purposes and making your designs /testing them.

aka you just place the blocks you need - think of it as sandbox - no need to gather any materials to build - just like a lego select the blocks and place it and have fun.

If the second mode was done in survival game - aka projection would be welded block by block - aka one block finishes welding - then another one would be started and welded ans so on - this game mode means - that in order to weld a block up to 100% you will need to have app components like steel plates, motors etc - requirements vary depenting on the block. and if you dont have needed parts then the welding would stop.

the survival mode intoduces the need to manage resourecess , mining them , building stuff and tending to your player limited needs - like oxygen, power for the suit - or the hydrogen fuel for the suits inbuild thrusters.

its meant as a bit more challanging experience for the players who want to duke it out - you will have to put some work in order to thrive.

initally creative mode is meant for new players - aka it provides a platform for easy (relatively speaking) experimentation and learning.

and the survival mode is meant for ppl with at least basic understanding how the game works and is meant as a more demanding play mode.

Cheers

those ships have been build using Projectors,Welders and the Materials needed. Try to check the net for Space Engineers - Projectors

The welders may have been placed on pistons and then timer blocks were used to make them move like that. The designs for the ships were Projectors that were attached to Rotors so they could turn. Another way to do the same thing is to have the welder (on the end of a piston) start INSIDE the projection (it's just a hologram, after all and not really there until it's welded) and then the welder slowly retracts through, welding as it goes.

I suggest going on Youtube and watching any of the wonderful tutorials there. I suggest Splitsie to start. He has several tutorials as well as a Survival series.

Here's a tutorial of mine for Timing Blocks and some examples of what you can do with them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtCSrVJVbdo&list=PLjh_yfsEOiU7wvmgDltzUhSlqaQUwBTKg&index=44&t=0s

Thanks. I'm assuming they just made the projection invisible then. Still shocked at how fast it built

you could check the learning to survive scenario, you can find an auto building facility in it that builds a fighter.

Projectors have an option to only show the currently buildable parts.

And 3d ship printers tend to work pretty fast, long as they don't run out of components or explode. I've got one in my main ship using modded welders (increased range, so no moving parts), and that can print off a small ship in seconds.

The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.
