How do you make hydrogen?
I've been trying to make a hydrogen engine and I cannot figure out how. Unless I've misunderstood I need an o2/h2 generator, a hydrogen tank, and a hydrogen engine. I've got the generator connected to the huge hydrogen tank with a conveyor (lights are green). I put ice in the generator, the indicator light changes from yellow to blue, I see the volume in the generator go up and then down as the ice is 'processed' until the ice is gone. The generator then shows 0 volume again. And the hydrogen tank shows zero. I've tried turning it off and on again. I've tried destroying and recreating the conveyor. I can't find any mention anywhere of having to do anything else so I assume it should be filling the hydrogen tank when I put ice in the generator? And what happens to the gas the generator is making while processing the ice? It and the hydrogen tank both show empty when the ice is gone.

The engine has it's own internal H2 storage. Check its terminal.

you'll need more than 1 O2 generator to both power a single hydrogen engine consistently, and fill its built in storage as well as an extra tank.

while its running it puts out 5MW, thats enough to charge 2 batteries in a few minutes so its not usually needed to be running for long periods of time. but if you wanna just run off ice power its possible but you'll want a large storage box to go with all that, about 3 or 4 oxygen generators to fill the excess into the tank on both the hydrogen tank and the engine.

if you want to get real advanced, get a script and a programmable block to auto toggle the hydrogen engine, or the oxy generators based on power demand being above a certain point where it would be necessary to continue operations (saves on ice)

I'm just experimenting right now to see how it works, but the engine isn't even connected to the tank. I'm stuck at the filling the hydrogen tank stage. It doesn't fill. I have the generator connected to the tank and that's all. The tank remains at 0 volume. The generator ends up at 0 volume when the ice is gone.

because of the bad burn time keen set the generator at i made a mod that is a (theoretical type)fusion reactor if you don't mind using mods use this ---> https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1680229197

When I put ice in the generator, the volume jumps up to represent the volume of ice I put in. It immediately begins quickly counting down to 0 as it processes the ice. While the mass and volume numbers are decreasing I scroll through and check every container on the grid. No activity in anything, including the hydrogen tank. Looking at the hydrogen tank itself, the 4 'fill' lights outside remain dark. The control panel on the tank shows 0.00/750.00L

I disconnected the platform from the main grid. It's just a 3x3 platform. I ground down the hydrogen engine. I put a battery on the platform to run the generator. So All I have is a generator connected to a hydrogen tank, and a battery. No Change. So I'm guessing my game is bugged then? Running in experimental mode but the only mod I have is eikesters decorations

Can we get a screenshot of your setup?

you are checking the inventory slots of your tank.

check the tank it self via the control panel.

You will get power out from the hydrogen engine even with just one O2/H2 generator, just not the full 5 MW. Connect the port in the O2/H2 generator to the port in the hydrogen engine and put ice into the O2/H2 generator. As long as both the O2/H2 generator and the engine are "on" and the ice lasts you'll get 2.5 MW out of the generator. As others have mentioned the generator consumes ice quite quickly so have plenty of available.

The hydrogen tank is not necessary but can be helpful. It allows you to fill the hydrogen tank from the O2/H2 generator when the hydrogen engine is *not* running. When you do switch the engine on it will pull out from the hydrogen engine the full amount allowing the engine to output the full 5 MW of power. Or, alternatively, you can just have two O2/H2 generators and lots of ice.

If you do use the hydrogen tank then check that it's *not* set to stockpile. If set to to stockpile it won't release any gas to the engine.

aha.. I see some content in the control panel. Is that a bug that it would show zero content in the inventory screen and content in the control panel screen?
You don't get much hydrogen out of ice. I only got a few percent from 10k of ice.
Thanks for the help!

The tank inventory is for storing (and refilling) hydrogen bottles. The amount of hydrogen stored in the tank is only shown in the control panel of the tank.

1ooo kg ice => 10ooo L hydrogen

How are you checking the tanks fill volume?
The control panel should be giving you the exact fill volume.

Dude, i told you to check the control panel earlier... :steamsad:

confirmed :steammocking:

Yeah well I said to check the terminal right away so I win :P

one other thing i found if you have the tank and O2/hydrogen gen and the hydrogen engine is not taking in any gas turn it off and on after that the hydrogen engine should start to run
