Right Behind u...: Beacons are not antennas. Beacons simply send out a signal to let you know where the beacon is. Antennas can send and receive lots of signals and can relay information between other antennas. This is why you can detect other suit antennas from further away when you are both in range of a ship or station antenna. Keep in mind that laser antennas are directional so only communicate with other laser antennas that they have been paired with. Also, if you are sitting in a ship that doesn't have an ore detector, you still won't get ore signals. Only ships with ore detectors will show them to you and the ship needs an antenna if you want to see them when not sitting on the ship.
Skeletor Jesus: Smokey, Buzzard and Pembroke all have good information. Make sure your HUD is showing all signals by cycling the display with H, have your hand drill in your hand and get as close to the ore deposit as you can or use a ship, preferably with an antenna, with an ore detector to show ore signals on your HUD. This assumes that you have your suit antenna on (O toggles it) and that the ship is powered and the antenna and ore detector are turned on. Increasing the range on the ore detector to max is something I always do and then turn it on only when I want to use it.
