currently my space engineers cfg file is missing and its telling me to get a dx11 card which I have a 12 on the bug report forum and no one has responded in 6 days so I wont be able to join your game
I use antanna to be able to control my Planet Scout tiny small ship from my Station and I will see the ores from a very long distance when detected so the station antenna range.
____________
I find ore first with my eyes and go there with my hand Drill or small ship with ore detector and fly very close to the soil.
The best Biomes to better see the ore spots are on ice and sand.
In space = I prefer to start on the Earth Moon at the huge flat area near one of the ice Pole, there is a lot of ores over there on the flat terrain but it is harder on the Moon and must have XP to find ores faster.

And I go in space to find the ones I did not found on the Moon, I explore the asteroids at 30Km around the Moon.
I also find with my eyes first on asteroids :

It should show less and only one "Ice" word on screen now = there was a lot of complaints about the ice so this one got a changed.
Just tell me when the save is on the Workshop.
I'm sure i'm just building the detector in bad spots, because i flew around with my drill out and found a few things, like half a km away from my base
If i build a mining ship and i fly around and can't see it i'll let you know for sure
Secondly, you need to be sitting in the same ship the ore detector is connected to. Or have your suit antenna on and the antenna of your vehicle on in order to see what its detecting.
if you want to just test it, build a battery then build an ore detector then an antenna, turn it all on (including your suit antenna with o) then you should see everything.
I found most of my first few deposits skimming around on jetpack just above the trees or along the surface of the ice.
Just hold it in your hands and move around and cover ground.
Looking for "off" colors on the ground helps a lot too. Unexplained shadows or brown grass can give them away, or big boulders commonly have stuff in them.
With just some time and the H2 to power the jetpack I found quite a bit. (Playing easy mode Earth.)
In the default, vanilla (no mods), game there are 2 types of ore on every asteroid. Planets have multiple types of ore but it's not all found in the same place. We have to roam around and find it.
Small Ore Detectors are 100% useless, never use them, waste of power.
Large Ore Detectors are only 150m. That's about 3% of what they used to be back when they were actually helpful.
As it is now, your only choice is Large Grid Ore Detectors on as small a Large Grid ship as you can possible build (or find on the workshop and blueprint craft)
