Block weight?
My basic ships look awful and I see others making great designs by adding extra blocks over engines and internal components etc to really build a great shape. My question is, do all these extra blocks really add a lot of extra weight to a ship or is it negligible??

1. You spend hours trying to figureout what game ALLOWS you to build instead of building what you want before you find a good design.
2. Blocks matter very little. Its more about cargoboxes and ore inside them. Empty ships engines are extreemly overpowered.

u cant ignore it entirely but its not that much i think
best is u copy it in creative and than add armor to the copy and test it

and half blocks and co can save alot of the extra weight if u dont plan on fighting with it
without affecting the look

If you want to learn with how much you can fly.
Its used to be roughly 1kN o thruster power = 100 kg just to keep in in air.(need to test it in creative)

So small Atmospheric thruster small blocks has 96 kN thrust maximum so it can keep in air 9600 kg. But if you want to fly you need more because inertia and ♥♥♥♥ like that when flying.
I would do dubble for safe flying.

Correct me if i'm wrong.

1kN= +/- 100 Kg just to keep in air
So 1kN = =+/- 50Kg for safe flying.
confirmed just tested it.

So 4 small Thrusters can lift this many small LIGHT blocks. So light block weight doesnt really matter.
Keep in mid those thruster in a picture also lifting:
Their own weight.
Pilot weight
gyroscope
Pilot seat
Reactors weight
and uranium ingots inside reactors.
All those things are alot heavier than blocks and still look how many blocks can ity lift.

Heavy blocks is difrent story theyare heavy. Also blast blocks are very heavy. And ore inside cargoboxes is your main consern for weight.

On the earthlike planet that is roughly correct as I assume the acceleration due to gravity at sea level is 9.81m/s² as on earth. Obviously on other planets/moons you would adjust it accordingly.

why? other places have less gravity
if it work on earth it work everywhere(that include it can leave the planet and is not atmos only)

Appreciate the replies, thanks.

Depends on the block. Light armor, internal wall blocks, hydrogen/oxygen tanks, decoration, no so much. Functional blocks more so. Heavy armor have significant mass per block. Cargo is where a lot of mass comes from, including the components inside assemblers and ores in refineries. Look at the components used to make a block, that's where there mass comes from. Look at a light armor block for large grid. 25 steel plates. no biggy. A gyroscope however? 600 steel plates plus additional components. So, yeah, its the guts of the vehicle that matter the most, the decoration, not so much.

If i remember right Alien planet has 1.1g so best to test your stuff there for escape and landing.

@OP the only thing i would say that hasnt been mentioned is avoid heavy armour in atmo or multi environment ships. It saps a lot of performance from atmo craft and increases fuel burn to hold the thing up.

As mentioned light armour is fine though, most weight comes from functional blocks/cargo :)
