Ore detector and modifications?
OK, so it seems the "standard" (50m small grid, 150m large grid) ore detector seems to work. For values of "work" that include "completely useless in space and not all that useful on planets".

Attempting to change the Maximum Range in CubeBlocks_tools.sbc , however, results in ore detectors that do NOTHING. They detect absolutely nothing, anywhere. Including the built-in one in the hand drill. Is this deliberate? Are we really not allowed to change the ore detector range on our own computer in single player?

Not correct. There are quite a few 'extended range ore detector' mods that only edit that setting.

But vanilla detectors are worthless. This is undeniable with the lowest level of common sense.

I use this one. Just a simple range update to 2x, 4x, or 8x. Old but still works.

Slightly off-topic : I found standard ore detector at 150m maximum range was detecting ore at 500m. I submitted that as a bug. Was promptly told to go pound sand.

To actually answer your question rather than suggest mods I wouldn't think it's that way since there are mods to change it.

I'm not sure what the mods change file wise, but the range can be increased.

hmm. I'll have to try a mod I guess, see if that works. Thanks. Because default ranges for ore detectors are truly laughably ridiculous.
