Turrets Shoot Faction Members and Own Ships
Yesterday while playing in survival my carrier got shot at by a faction members ship (yet it doesn't shoot other factions set to peace?????). I managed to back off in time before any serious damage had been done but it was still a serious "wtf" moment. Today I had put turrets on my carrier and as I undocked my small miner to go mining and it get's torn to tatters by my own carrier? Please tell me this is a bug because this is absolutly ridiculous. Is this not intended and will this get fixed anytime soon?

My turrets were set to shoot neutrals (since I'm on a server obviously). I have a distinct feeling that someone is going to say that's what happens when you set turrets to shoot neutrals though... if that's the case why on earth would SE have turrets with the setting toggled shoot the person to built it, let alone faction members which are clearly not supposed to be neutral? Ultimatly this is all ass-backwards.

For the longest time I wouldn't touch multiplayer with a ten foot pole becuase of all the issues plaguing multiplayer in SE but enough improvements were made to the point where I gave it a chance and I was so far really impressed and enjoying multiplayer for the first time in forever... until today. Is there anything I can do about this to prevent this sort of thing from happening again? Either way it's either not working properly or there needs to be much better clarification for turrets in the game because this is aggrevating as hell.

well most likely there was at least one block that contained computers wasnt owned - and thats why the turret opened fire in order to destroy it - i saw smth like that few times on multi.

None of that blocks belonged to anyone else. I don't believe that could be it and I had been shot at by my own faction member the other day too...

EDIT: I deleted the remainder of the grid to be sure that everything was 100% owned by me. Other than scrap everything was indeed mine. The guns didn't ever stop shooting at me andonly reason anything was even left was because i managed to hide behind a side of the carrier they couldn't hit me from. In short it's confirmed that not one block was owned by anyone other than myself.

If your friend is in the same Faction = your turrets are NOT supposed to shoot at him.

shoot neutrals = will shoot all shtuff set to "Nobody"

I would report to the Devs because you have the save to share.
Report and post your world with short description of the problem, here : https://support.keenswh.com/

Only this way they can find the problem and fix it.

EDIT

Never happened to me so I don't have any bugged worlds to share with the Devs.

It's a game feature. Turret's 'Commit War Crimes' setting is default behaviour.

I think it happened to me in survival a long time ago and now, when I build a turret, I make sure there is no ammo connected to this new turret so I have time to do the setup before it starts shooting.

Oh! And I remember that I trun OFF/ON sometimes to reset.

I don't have a save though this happened in multiplayer on a server...

This has happened to me as well. I've not yet played MP only SP and I'm a pretty new player. I swear when I first started on SP the guns were behaving properly. I had them set to kill anything in sight but they did not fire on my own ships. Now, I get shot to pieces if I have guns targeting anything other than meteors regardless of ownership and settings. I think this is a bug from an update.

I've tested this by pasting a new ship into the game with guns disabled then changing the ship to my ownership, checking all blocks for ownership and confirming it correct. Then turning guns on and and watching the ship being blasted to bits.
Burstar Nov 26, 2018 @ 9:21am
@Mykell It feels that way because in the beginning you aren't pasting in BP as a novice, and SP means friends aren't visiting you. Turrets always behaved like this, it's that pasting in bps can now do weird things with ownership vs built by.

It's such a simple fix to make the default to off instead of on that I can only guess Keen wants it this way to force testing of the ownership/builtby features, and people are forgetting that they are Beta Testers not Players atm.

@Burstar your comment is helpful. Thanks. I've now built my own ship, not pasted it, so I'll try it out on a new save. When I first started I started out on the Easy Start outpost on an asteroid with Big Red and Big Blue. I changed ownership on those and the guns were fine -- Well, Big Blue had some issues with transferring all blocks to me but that's a different issue. But then, I pasted the same ships into a new world and changed ownership and the guns attacked them.

So, are you saying it is the pasting from clipboard that is doing this? Is this a setting I've not yet found?

Thanks so much for the answer/info.

Edit: I got to thinking after responding that it does seem the only ships targeted were the BP pasted ships. Hmmm... Ok, some testing to do when I get home. Thanks again!

AFAIK if you make your own BP, copy and paste it, the ownership stays you. It's when you paste in BP from the BP menu from others that it can problematic.

Ownership of terminal blocks can be determined by looking at the block in the Terminal Window. Built By can be determined by hovering your hand welder over blocks and looking at the info panel that appears. This should help you determine if that's the problem.

Dan2D3D's advice is also sound. Turn off 'Target Neutrals' on all turrets and get in the habit of checking that setting all the time.
UltraEmailMan Nov 26, 2018 @ 11:34am
Additionally, the Smart Targetting mod allows you to block priorities for turrets. That way, you can make them target enemy turrets first instead of the reactor that's burried behind 4 layers of heavy armor.

@Burstar Thanks for the additional information. This will be very helpful in figuring it out. I have a sneaking suspicion it is a combo of BPs built by others vs my own builds and Targeting Neutrals. Sounds like, from what you have described, "built by" and "owned by" may be a meaningful distinction.
Mykell Nov 26, 2018 @ 12:12pm
@UltraEmailMan appreciate the pointer to the Smart Targeting Mod. I'm going to definitely check that out. Now that you mention it, the guns were just hammering away at the that point on the ship.

Been a long time since this has been talkeda bout but I figured I would share my findings. I found out what caused this problem for me in the first place. While I don't know if this also happens in singleplayer as well I have observed the same thing again that had happened to me before that messed up my ships, though damage was fairly minimal at least. The reason why my own or faction members turrets were attacking my ships was because any of my blocks that have been damaged by a impact (I don't know if combat damage will dot he same though -- need to test that) will have their ownership reverted to NOBODY. As a result any turrets that are set to shoot neutrals will attack you or any other freindly grids that have taken damage as a result of this.

I would also submit this as a bug in the bug reports section but I'm not allowed to post... as if that makes any sense at all... but I figure maybe this information might be of use for anyone else who might run into the same problem too so they won't have to feel as helpless as I was about it.

I've only played SP so far and have not noticed this effect yet. I assuming it must be a MP thing.
