May be worth to try those modes and verify the game files with Steam if no sound at all.
I've just tried this, My save was on Arcade Sound and I've switched to realistic and it sounds pretty much identical.
In game I've also toggled the realistic engine sound toggle in audio.
When inside a cockpit it sounds, I guess better? .. Kind of a hum when you go forward and move around from the engine, but certainly not what you'd expect from 10+ thrusters pushing 50000kg off of the ground.
When I switch to 3rd person view even that hum disappears, I just kinda fly around with little audio cues that my engines are even working, the music and trees are louder than my ship.
I can make a video of it but from watching youtubers such as Splitsie play I can see it's working as intended.
I do hate to compare games, because star citizen is quite different but sound like this
https://youtu.be/hzsAUrw1Nr8?t=50
would make the game feel so much better, because right now. Despite the fact I've seen you've released your game, it (sounds) like it's still in alpha.
This bug may be reported with a SE programmer reaction, I will go have a look at the reports. be back later ...
I just want to post some recent examples of lack of any audio in game.(I don't believe these videos have their in game sound down as you can hear other things)

Dragon Nation makes some pretty epic builds, and here is his launch into space, 3...2...1... LAUNCH... poof... slowly floats into the sky, extremely extremely anti climatic..
Even at 9:20 when the engines are at full whack its silent and sounds pretty timid.
Another example from the tutorial I used to get into Space Engineers
https://youtu.be/SrDI1_MAokE?t=1162
I get this is a starter ship, but theres multiple human sized turbo engines attached to that vehicles, one that weighs 13500kg and you'd think it was a hot air balloon.
I do wanna make it clear I'm enjoying your game, and if my comments come across rude etc it might just be the way I type, I hope I'm being constructive here.

Sorry, I should have specified tho a lot knows me, I am not a Dev but Moderator community helper, Tester/Player since the beginning and last year they gave me the [dev] Tag so I can be admin of the Workshop to help the community more.
(Steam Moderator role can't be admin)
They need an overhaul of all the sounds. And add real surround. With a seven speaker setup this game doesn't like more than 2. And even with only 2 speakers you'll find the left/right reversed for many of the sounds.
We got new ship sounds in 2016, go to 2:30 of this old video I made :

And they changed it a few time already and may just need a good vote "Feedback" about it on the Portal
Edit
sorry wrong link changed
