and they have to be the same grid size
It sounds as if the disabled ship is without power. Power it up first, at the very least shut down everything but the merge block and then build a new battery for it. Then try merging them again. I know this works myself, because this is how I build my modular ships, using merge blocks and one battery on the portion which is removed or replaced. (I build my ships like we build ships in the real world, parts pieced together).
The other was the person i was playing with and his was powered as well. The merge blocks just wouldn't connect. turn from red when unpowered to white when powered to yellow when in proxcimity of each other but would not turn green and latch onto each other.
But we did notice my landing gear latched onto him and almost flipped him in the process lol.
So we ended up just ramming my miner to flip it over and reverse thrust it back to base. that was fun, Almost got clipped my a meteor lol.
Maybe we will just use landing gear to tow ships from now on.
big and small grids cant be merged
