How does one setup a LAN server?
Hi. My brother and I started playing space engineers multiplayer on a non-dedicated server hosted from his PC just launched straight out of his game.

I am noticing a lot of rubber banding when trying to jump over corners or whenever tires are involved. It seems like pretty ordinary lag.

Is that because the game connects us via the internet, even though we have a LAN set up at home? The game doesn't list his server on the LAN tab, so I'm assuming as much.

1. Would this lag likely decrease if we were to setup a LAN server?

2. If so. How?

Thanks 😁

Just create the world and set it friends only = all the local players will by able to join from the LAN tab.

OR

If you have 2 computers

>> You could try the Official Dedicated server:

The Official guide : https://www.spaceengineersgame.com/dedicated-servers.html

And download the Dedic app from Steam, here is where by using your Steam account:

Download with Steam > https://steamdb.info/app/298740/

His server is setup as friends only. It still only shows in the friends tab on my pc

Ah! That is very easy to set!

Just set the number of players to the ones at home! (local)

So if you have 2 friends at home = set the world for 3 players maximum.

Also we can do this in-game >> hit F3 to see some server host options.

Oh! I may have mistaken !?

You said : " It still only shows in the friends tab on my pc "

So you would like to see it in the LAN tab?

= I use Steam Server link for that.

>> It's in "View" (on top of your Steam) >>> Click on "Servers"

I usually add all to my Favs or use the LAN tab.

1. 2 players, max players is set to 2
2. It's not about where I find it. Is there a difference between establishing a connection to an in-home server via the friends-tab (from ingame) and joint a server via the LAN-tab?

If I joined via the friends tab, does the data traffic happen over the internet or only locally? Do you get my point? It's about being able to play OFFLINE multiplayer with presumably less lag.

It's better when I use one of my computers to run the Dedic. yes.

Do you have 2 computers?
maybe try with friend's PC! = you could see how it goes before buying a new computer to run the Dedic... I would do some testing to know more before...

Test "Friends" connect and Dedic if you can.

+

Hit > Shift + F11 < in-game to see the stats on screen and that will give you the right values, as to know if it's better using the Dedic.

Shift + F11 =

EDIT

Also CTRL + H to see netstat graph on screen.

I'm having the same issue as you and this Dan fails to understand smh. Did you figure it out?

Yes it is connecting y'all through the net, depending upon your router may need configuration, if it has been, I also had issues seeing local LAN servers in the past hooked via Ethernet switch, the via Microsoft support we found out that we need to set up an internal home network and be on the same network THEN any machines Windows XP or greater must install some sort of networking crap software OR install Microsoft's Netboui that is extremely unsecured but I'm not thinking that's your problem, you may have multiple firewalls hardware and software on both machines preventing you from fully benefiting from a LAN., if you both are on WiFi that will most definitely lag you out.

The best would be to ask the Devs on the support Portal or have a look at the reports cause if there is = you should see a Dev comment and I recommend to report if not reported so they can help.

Yeah I might just do that Dan. How are the devs with community engagement? Do they respond to these issues in a timely manner?

All can chat with them on Keen Discord and they like good Feedbacks and bug report posted on the new Support Portal :approve:

I chat with them and I see them chating with other members = I can tell that they are very kind!

Huh...okay thanks Dan!

I am in the same boat... LAN games used to be so easy and straight forward before all this "Online LAN" crap.
