Are you sure there isn't a way to do it? I've seen advanced ship-printing machines which seem to weld a few blocks at the same time.
I normally use large ship welders for static printers, or a small welding ship for mobile welding operations. There are several mods that will extend the range of a welders if you don't think the vanilla range is big enough.
The video Sailor has presented is good, although somewhat dated, and provides a good basis for anyone not familiar with projectors.
One option that is not mentioned is that you can tic the option to only show buildable blocks this helps with visibility but is not a fool proof method of building.
