I will mention a couple of things, if you have absolutely no idea where in space the ship is then your best bet would be to cheat using Space Master (Alt+F10). Change the focus to either largest distance from player, or largest grid then using the next or previous buttons cycle through the grids until you find your ship. Click the transport button and then player control - this will put you very close to the ship you were looking for. Press F10 again to release Space Master. Mark your smaller ship with a GPS marker to help you find that later.

If you don't want to use that method and assuming your antenna's/beacons still have power you should be able to move in the general direction of you last know postion and with any luck you should see the signal pop up on your hud.

Personally I would go the space master route. Of course this is all for not if you do have a waypoint set in which case follow Bad Luck's advice (I had to laugh at the parody) and turn on the waypoint so you can see it in the HUD.
