Has anyone ever drilled through a planet?
Hey. I was wondering if anyone has built a.massive drill and cored out a planet yet? Like drill a wide hole completely through so you could see through to the other side?

I want to do that it would be epic. Anyone tried that yet?

Can confirm. Journey to the center of the earth was a mission of mine for a while. I did it with a hand-drill, and set myself up with medical stations about every 1km. I wish I'd known how to make mining ships back then, but I was very new. Anyway, I fell into the void like people describe... and that was the end of that.

As a fan of Terraria, I was hoping for something cool down there, but there was nothing, not even ore. :steamfacepalm: But I suppose the devs have more pressing issues.

So is it impossible to drill from one side of the planet to the other? What happens do you hit a solid wall or something.

u just stuck in the mid of it , its empty inside

Oh wow. So can you fly through the middle to the other side and drill out?

W8, so it is possible? Ok, i have to try that out.

Yep. After you reach a certain depth, stuff starts to bug out. It doesn't allow you to drill any further, and anything that "touches" that ground, will disappear. You also can "fall through the world".

It would be pretty awesome, though.

From my experience, u drill stright down, u start to enter the core area, and gravity flips out.

Maybe put alot of gravity generators on ur ship and aim them all at ur ship. and make sure u have more gravity then the planet? maybe that would fix the gravity issue. no idea.

Sounds like a good way to break the game

After a certain depth, it deletes your grid.

Have fun trying though!

I don't think that is still the case. If your character is present your grid will remain. But if you try to drop warheads to blow a hole thru the planet at some point those will disappear when they get far enough from the player.

If you try to drill thru you may need to reload the game several times because a certain distance your drills can just stop removing material. I've experienced this at depths as little as 250m.

But I think it is now possible to drill completely thru. Although most examples I've seen were done using voxel hands.

My friend and I got to the core once via dropping bombs nonstop from a device posititioned over the planet. We coined it "assing" (Dont ask, just dumb friends at 4am) From what I remember, afer a certain depth the warheads start disappearing, as does everything else other than players. though somehow we did get to the core, because gravity gets really weird. I dont remember if we ever got to the other side of a planet, but we have tried.

Well maybe a planet is too big, but what about the moon?

I did once with voxel hands in creative. Couldn't make the whole trip through the tunnel w/o crashing to desktop at the time. It was also only a 19km world too.

Drilling planets has always been a big thing for me in SE. The problem with it is i had a high speed drill and eventually the planet glitched out and i ended up inside of it. Turns out the planets themselves are hollow by default. When you cause voxel damage, in this case, drilling vertically down a planet, you create voxels that go "into" the planet.. giving off an optical illusion of a cave..but on the outside of this cave is nothing.

I think I saw somebody did it, but I don't know if the updates made it impossible now or what. I only reached about 10km deep, but I got tired, bored, and I was doing the hole with warheads

Theoretically couldn't you drill through the planet, but bypass the center where the game glitches? When you get down to the point where the warheads glitch, and nothing else is working, then just turn to the side and follow this(I assume it's a sphere) sphere around until you get to the opposite side, and then go back to the surface there. It wouldn't be direct, but it could be interesting for flying ships through the planet instead of around in theory.
