Edit* My experience is that only Ore and other simple materials will pass through the SMALL ports and complex materials like Steel Plates, etc will only pass through the LARGE ports. So, you have to have these ports aligned or connected to each other to have the designed materials "pass through".... again, I might be wrong, but this is what I encountered.
Check to see that all conveyor tubes/junctions are fully built, and the tubes (if any) are showing all green lights. Yellow tubes are not complete paths, and red is broken/unpowered.
Maybe share a couple pictures of what you've got so we can all poke at it?
The connector has a large port on the back, that has to line up with another large port, or have some conveyor tubes attach to one of its side small ports, you cant butt it up to a small conveyor port, it wont pull items like that.
Like Rv2pc3d says only some objects can pass through small ports. A lot of components need large openings, however all ore should pass through small ports :)
Recommend not leaving containers on the ground, and just loading a (powered) vehicle directly.

And you're welcome in regards to the response. You will find that as long as you are cordial and coherent, you will get quick, knowledgeable responses.
BTW, Steam does have a workshop that supports SCREEN SHOTS, Videos and Blueprints. Click F12 to take screen shots from in-game.
You have Connector>tube>???Is that the spacer block??
Whatever it is its red and its a large port lining up with a small on the cargo, thats the break in the chain ;)
PS id spin the cargo containers so the large ports are front to back and then all should work. May have to run some small tubes down the sides to hook up to cockpit
PPS just saw your post glad ya got it sorted. Yeah only reason the sorter wasnt wqorking was because a small cargo port was touching a large port :)
If this were my vehicle, I would place the Conveyor Sorters on the BASE instead of the vehicle. Once the vehicle connects to the base, either a Conveyor Sorter or an active Refinery (currently with Components in queue to be built) will then "draw" the designated materials out of the vehicle's storage and into the designated location (i.e., Cargo Container or Refinery).
Edit* if you will please excuse the shameless plug, you can take a look at the minimalist conveyor system that I have built on the Lone Survivor world to get an idea of how materials can be "moved" or "channeled" through a system.
