The only time large o2 tanks are needed is when you have areas that need to be depressurized to not waste o2 gas so you use a vent to fill the tank from the room
As mentioned you may want to bring an O2 bottle along if you plan on spending a long time outside the cockpit, like if you are going to scout asteroids with just your suit. One bottle will be plenty - just stick it in the O2 generator to fill back up.
As also mentioned, you probably have a problem with your conveyor layout. Not only will gas not get to the tank or the cockpit, but your ore won't get back to the medium cargo and connector. I can't tell what that block is between the cockpit and the hydro tank, but if you move the O2 gen there with 2 small ports facing the cockpit and the large facing the hydro tank, that should work.
Finally, I'm not sure if you've read about using thrust override to get to space, but you should check it out. If you just press forward (or up) the whole time, you will burn through a lot more hydrogen. If you use thrust override on the hydro thrusters facing the planet, just enough to keep your speed right below 100 m/s, you will save a lot of gas.
Finally, finally, you might want to fill that up with stone or something before you go to space to make sure it has enough thrust once it's full of space loot. You don't want to find out when you are 2K above your base that you don't have enough thrust to slow down.
PS: wind turbines are much more effective in atmosphere than solar.
PPS: you only have 9 minutes left on that unknown signal. You'd better hurry.
On the side note - that ship has not enough engines - you should keep in mind added mass from mining - otherwise it might go up - but it will certainly go down - much faster than desired - prob leaving a decent crater afterwards. Cheers
Side note 2 - althought the hydro tanks are bulky - i would certainly recomend adding another one - with hydro ships you can never have enough fuel.
Side note 3 - as for returning - you might consider using parachutes when going back in atmo - they are cheap - and will allow you to save a lot of fuel when landing. - otherwise that single tank might be getting kinda dangerously empty (depening on how much you spend on take off and rumaging in space).
