Yes, I tried that option, same problem.
There are a few workarounds. After the piston/rotor has been constructed, it's possible to put a projector out on the end (somewhere) and project the proper sub-grid in order to build it. With rotors, it's possible to build the rotor head and sub-grid elsewhere and maneuver it into position.
Something that has worked well in the past for me: Start a creative world, and spawn the complete craft in. Take blueprints of each separate sub-grid, with proper labeling as to where they go on the main-grid. Return to your survival world with your fistful of blueprints and have at it.
Hi, we can't build multigrid creations with the projector, yet!?
>> this option is in the community Testers votes so I recommend to go add your vote so this feature can be added in game.

that means > we can paste the ship in survival and it will not fall on the soil because it is all conveyor connected with ice, Uranium > Power in < and should be working with the projector but not all WS author does the same so why it is important to test the WS item in a Creative testing world to know more before using.
This is why in my WS creations i break down " survival ready " in to two categories in my descriptions.
1) Buildable yes/no
2) Functional yes/no
makes it much easier for players to understand what you mean by "survival ready "
