note that when connected they're considered one grid for most purposes, most notably the Y (main power) and P ('parking' toggles all landing gear, wheel breaks and connectors at once) keys. using either while things are connected can result in anything from mild annoyance to losing hours of work: disconnected vehicles crashing, unpowered things being eaten by trash collection, etc.
tangentially, I recommend checking out Splitsie's tutorials on youtube. SE's got a lot of weird little quirks, and he does a great job of getting new folks on their feet
1, Select a projector thats the same grid size as the ship you want to build
2, Go to its control pannel and select the blueprint you want to build
2, Use the offset sliders so one block of the ship touches the projector (or any block on the projectors grid)
4, The block touching the grid will be slightly brighter, indicating it can be welded
5, Start from there and weld the thing up, then grind it away from the projector
Hope that helps :)
