Imagine a simple wooden box with a top that is simply secured with a single nail in one corner such that it can be rotated open or closed. If you were to make such a box in the game you would need to use the blast door blocks for the top and a rotor for the nail such that when the top rotated open the extra space provided by the narrower width blast door blocks would not cause a collison with the other blocks of the box and allow it to open smoothly and without causing damage.
Edit: Likewise pistons can be use to open/close "blast doors" by sliding them back and forth past the normal heavy and light armor blocks making up the rest of the "box" rather than by rotating the "blast door" using a rotor.
I wouldnt call them a relic, still very usefull for anything that needs to pass through a tight space. Access ramps, elivators, small grid doors, tank turrets, walker parts.....so many uses. Also they have better explosive resistance than armour. But yeah not airtight, so if you want massive airtight doors it gets......complicated lol
