That's not to say it cannot be a multiplayer game in the future. Four years ago after the game first came out there were many servers with admins that struggled to keep them running while the game was being developed. I played on several of them and had a good time. But then Keen announced that they would postpone working on the netcode until after planets were released and that took about 2 years. So, all of the servers I played on went away and I've not tried to play on one since.
But now that planets have been released and they have started working on the netcode there may be a resurgence of public servers in the future. We'll just have to see.

But if you are trying to learn the game the best way is to follow along with a tutorial since a lot of the time the people you find are looking to learn from you.
Splitsie has the most up-to-date tutorials. And I'd recommend avoiding other ones that are a year old and older as the game has changes dramatically and they may contain out-of-date info.
