Good game for 9 year old?
Is this a good game for a 9 year old? Both in terms of complexity as well as content. The most complex game he can play on his own is Age of Empires/Mythology. How would the learning curve compare? He, of course, has logged way too many hours on Minecraft and Terraria :)

I'm also looking at Rising World and Astroneer.

As a parent myself.

Content...............100% acceptable, there is an alein planet where creatures will " kill " his character, nothing graphic or visually disturbing.

Complexity.

Again id have to say yes its fine. Theres alot of different components needed to manufacture te various parts to make a craft fly or run. Each component takes different raw materials to refine and produce. Finding them teaches you to locate and refine each one as you cant make them w/o those materials. So problem solving/yime management and priotities come into play. All good things to gain experiance/understanding in.

Flying.

With gyroscopes the mechanics are simplified to thrust versus weight. Enough engines and you can get anything to lift off basically.

Heres the videos i watched to learn the game.

I would say if you are ok with him shooting at wolves, the content is fine. It is quiet a complex game for a beginner, but if he can keep at I see no reason why he couldn't play this.

This is probably a good game for a 9 year old. I also STRONGLY encourage you to look into Kerbal Space Program. It is really the perfect game for kids (and adults).

You are entitled to your opinion. You really think al those complex calculations about building/launching and flying spaceships is within the reach of a 9 year old boy ?

First off, you'd be amazed at how much small children can understand about the world. I've taught kids about relativity, black holes and other complex astronomical topics and they responded with intelligent and meaningful questions.

But you don't need to do complex calculations to enjoy KSP.

3 years fanboy here. SE is a really good game, but it have a very hard learning curve. Maybe you should get it now that it is on sales.
but I will recommend Astroneer, althought it is also in a very Alpha or Early Access state, if you know what that means. but it already have a lot of content.
The thing is, SE is a sandbox game, so there is no story or specific gameplay style. If you like to build ships and then do some battles it is pretty entertaining. The Survival part is not quite done, it doesn't feel complete... yet
on the other hand, Astroneer, you have a lot to explore, discover, build bases, research, etc. but also, not much about survival, or classic survival donno how to call it.
Anyways, there is no comparison between this two titles, they have different game mechanics, but, well... space and astronauts

I actually have kids so im not surprised at all. Watych that series of videos to see how many calculations are needed. Lets agree to disagree as my opinion is 100000% oppodsite on wether KSP would be " fun " for a 9 year old.

And something told me you didnt have kids.

Scott Manley's kids seem to like KSP...
I guess mileage may vary.
Valtari Dec 24, 2016 @ 2:21pm
I've never had to do any calculations and have well in excess of 200 hours if you include my non-steam hours in KSP. I can easily get to the Mun, Minmus, Duna and do fly-by's of gas giants without more than guesstimates and using higher class parts.

A child of 9-12 could easily get into KSP, and even if they cannot yet get the full gist of the game, they will get a good feel for the basic physics at play. Furthermore, with parental supervision and assistance they could try their hand at downloading and installing mods which will give them some basic computer skills.

Furthermore the game is 66% off so even if the kid doesn't like it the parent could enjoy it a lot for a very low price.

There are many way how you can play KSP. You can put bits & pieces together and crash a lot (or less, if you're lucky or have crashed enough times to gain some form of insight). And then there's the more geeky way of calculating stuff.

There's one way to play SE: no math at all (well, apart from basic calculus, but...).

Space Engineers has a creative mode that's a lot like building with Legos. The controls are easy to learn and your creations are as simple or complex as you make them. There is violence, but no gore in the game. The majority of the Space Engineers community is friendly and helpful.

This is about the most egotistical thing i HATE about these public forums.

Theres a specific question asked, in this case its about 3 games. Some1 comes in and basically ignores the question and hi-jacks the entire thread to promote their opinion and relentlessly takes control of the entire thread to further their own agenda.

In this case this pirate doesnt know the children involved AT ALL !! Or have any of his own.He forms a general comment that ALL kids are a " perfect match " for a game not even mentioned. Completely ignoring the topic and polite request from the actual parent of the child in question.

Add another option ofr a parent to consider................ yeah i get that but to construct a soap box and non stop preach his own message is rude, selfish and inconsiderate.

Op i apologize for my part in this conversation, i was replying on topic to your questions now it seems im being attacked for my ON TOPIC opinion.

It xmas for Gods sake.................. cant you put yourself second for a few days and let parents of other kids ask a question and get polite answers w/o you forcing your personal agenda on them..............OVER AND OVER.

You win......KSP is the " perfect match " for ANY child and to NOT buy it is a crime against humanity and your specific child.

Unsubbed

Who was the one who started talking about KSP? Who wanted to question the level of math it requires? Who started to post KSP-related Youtube videos?

You also sound like that everyone who doesn't have kids is automatically inferior.

Still, merry Newtonmas.
