Connectors are the prime way of connecting grids. By putting one on a ship, and one on a station, you can move the ship closer allowing them to activate - press p to lock them and then the grids are connected, sharing power, and if connected to conveyors, allows materials, oxygen and hydrogen to pass across the grids.
Pistons and rotors work in similar ways, where you would build a grid upon them. When you place either of these objects, a head would appear on the otherside - this is the new grid which you build on. If you would like to attach a ship to this (strongly not recommended unless in creative and experimenting), you can use merge blocks or a connector attached to this grid.
So the "wings" are now seperate grids and i have to use a merge block or connector connect them to the main ship?
You need a script, thrusters on grids connected by rotor or piston dont use WASD input
This one may or may not still work, worth a try though

PS the same goes for gatlings on small ships - aka if you put gatling gun on a rotor operated wing it wont fire with the others - unless you make a group with all those gatlings and put a command to shoot on your bar.
