the AI enemies are jsut so the game has some kind of hazard for survival, the real challenge is a PvP enviroment. space is vast so it can be hard to track down an enemy base (unlike ark where most bases are super obvious...) if you find a good server, you can sometimes jump around the system once your far enough and got a decent ship and try to find some active players and raid them. then instead of it being a challenge to get to the pilot seat to gut it, now its a race to try and disarm the ship, fight off any attackers at the same time and try to break their med bays before they can come back after you.
i havnt done it myself in a long time though, i stick to the tinkering and inventing solutions to common problems. like, making a low power wheeled vehicle that can eat an entire boulder made out of small blocks. you know, crazy stuff.
