Heavy armor on a light ship?
If it means your ship's empty weight is 74,000, is it even worth it?

Depending on your intent.

A small-block ship meant to fight other ships, heavy armor is good. Making one now. Light armor gets chewed through quickly, but heavy armor takes a while to get through.

When not having a fighter ship, I only use armor (light) for some structural support.

only if you building a fighter, and even then it is not entirely necessary. If you like the whole frontal attack "Damn the torpedos full steam ahead" kind of attack then you may want to have some place up front. But good placement/use of decoys, and you can mitigate most of the damage.

Of course this has less significance if playing MP.

yes. armouring heavy wear segments pay's off. Heavy armour patches combined with decoys can mitigate damage quite well.

Bascically the message, I think, is that you don't have to use heavy armor on the entire craft. Just protect the pieces and parts that are vital. A ship that has a mix of both heavy and light can be quite effective.

I find that blast door parts protect just as well as heavy armour, and weigh less I believe (Plus they can look pretty cool)

yep, yep - done that myself

As all things are in sandbox games, it's what you need and what you can afford. If your can't afford to replace it, don't build it. If you can afford to build it once and use heavy some without fear of losing it, that's a risk for you to take.

I suggest using the energy shield mod. For some reason Keen hasn't implemented it in a game that has equally sci-fi gravity generators and compact nuclear reactors that we can hand-deliver uranium to.

I normally mix my use of armors; light for non-essential girth, and heavy to line the vital points. And if it is a rover, I'd use much more heavy armor, due to the wheels' ability to handle more weight.
