the easiest way would be to add a full wall of blocks (12x12 that you will delete after) the same size next to (one block out) the exact same position that you want to paste
Actually, that doesn't work either. The block that is used on snap is off-center and at the bottom of the thing you are copying. Irritating, since the only way to get it right was convoluted.

I had to extend a beam at the bottom of the first engine block (6 on the left, 7 on the right, because as I said, the point that snaps is off-center) and 2 block away (because it refuses to snap if you are "in" the engine, which means you always have to try and attach it from the other side, because you can't move the projection away from you. Even bigger problem for bigger items.)

I's a pain in the ass to get it right. It would be nice if we could designate a block to act as the anchor/snap point
I mean what genius decided free rotate without the option to rotate in 90 degree increments to allow things to snap was a freaking good idea?
I hit "B" for free rotation and pasting, hit "B" also reset to Planet Gravity and Bounding Box.
Basically I think Space Engineers wants you to make your own creations for the purposes of creating NEW content and not just a bunch of old cut up ships.
A - The block you look at when you hit ctrl+C is the block that will attach to the other piece. So if we aim at the block top centre, ctrl+C then we can easily paste to the top centre block on the other part.
^^Also have to look at the correct face of the block, the one you want to join. If you look at the wrong face it dosent work properly
B - You can move the part closer or futher away from you with Ctrl (or alt cant remember) + mouse wheel. That lets you paste parts of any size, even an entire ship. Its also how you spwn large blueprints in when your stuck inside the bounding box.
Once your farmilliar with these two you can really get going with copy paste building :)
