Copy/paste and aligment/snapping problem
So I recently go back into Space Engineers to find he game much improved and started making a new ship.

Right of the back I created a huge engine block and wanted to copy/paste it - but here's the problem: I can't align it properly to save my life.

There's just no way to paste big parts (the engine block is 12x12) because the view is stuck in the center of the object and you have to get close for the block snap/attach to happen.
So it never attached properly, and there's no undo, so I have to delete it manually.

I tried several times, changing shape and making marked parts to make aligning easier, but it just isn't happening!

use the mouse wheel to adjust distance and if you are about to place it and decide not to press escape to cancel the copy paste

Hi,
the easiest way would be to add a full wall of blocks (12x12 that you will delete after) the same size next to (one block out) the exact same position that you want to paste :fix:

Actually, that doesn't work either. The block that is used on snap is off-center and at the bottom of the thing you are copying. Irritating, since the only way to get it right was convoluted.

I had to extend a beam at the bottom of the first engine block (6 on the left, 7 on the right, because as I said, the point that snaps is off-center) and 2 block away (because it refuses to snap if you are "in" the engine, which means you always have to try and attach it from the other side, because you can't move the projection away from you. Even bigger problem for bigger items.)

I's a pain in the ass to get it right. It would be nice if we could designate a block to act as the anchor/snap point

I think I aim the block I need when I blueprint.

It would be nice if, as I have watched in youtube videos as recent as six months ago when trying to get some tips on playing this game, that stuff snapped into place and rotated at 90 degrees in order to place things.

I mean what genius decided free rotate without the option to rotate in 90 degree increments to allow things to snap was a freaking good idea?

@Gorione

I hit "B" for free rotation and pasting, hit "B" also reset to Planet Gravity and Bounding Box.

I think it is intended by Space Engineers to prevent this, as you can get blueprints of several different ships, cut them up into sections you want to keep, then paste all the good sections together to create the ultimate ship like in a drafting and design program like AutoCad.
Basically I think Space Engineers wants you to make your own creations for the purposes of creating NEW content and not just a bunch of old cut up ships.

What you need to know to do this easy....

A - The block you look at when you hit ctrl+C is the block that will attach to the other piece. So if we aim at the block top centre, ctrl+C then we can easily paste to the top centre block on the other part.

^^Also have to look at the correct face of the block, the one you want to join. If you look at the wrong face it dosent work properly

B - You can move the part closer or futher away from you with Ctrl (or alt cant remember) + mouse wheel. That lets you paste parts of any size, even an entire ship. Its also how you spwn large blueprints in when your stuck inside the bounding box.

Once your farmilliar with these two you can really get going with copy paste building :)

Ah! I just notice how old is this discussion, I usually look at the date before posting but you got me on this one, Gorione.

Karmaterrorᵁᴷ just shared the solution in better words than me, thanks!

NOTE to all members

Tho it's Old! very old and the OP got it fixed for a long time > 2017 and we are in 2019.
(I usually lock very old discussions so keep an eye on the date)

Always better to create a new discussion when it's too old :cozyspaceengineersc:
