How do I open SE DDS textures?
So, I am using GIMP with the DDS addon, and I am not able to open almost any of the texture files, as I was able in the older version of SE. Does anyone know a program that can open that kind of compression/something of DDS for free? Or a converter?

I use the develop version (currently 1.171)
If you mean GIMP then I think it's 2.8

yeah im using 2.8 as well, but i cant for the life of me get it going. tried paint.net as well. i can open it with microsoft visual studios (free version) but it looks weird (the layout of everything that is) compared to Gimp or Pain.net.

When you open it, does it come up with any errors?

Gimp says:

Unsupported DXGI format (99)

for me.

"Invalid compression format.
Only DXT1, DXT3, DXT5, ATI1N and ATI2N formats are supported." that's what it shows for me.
Aswell as it says that the DDS plugin cannot open that file. Plus some other stuff (like the path of that object/file)

ok for some reason its working now... I wiped Gimp from the computer, i did a reinstall of Gimp (latest 2.8.18) and put the DDS plugin into the correct folder it tells you to.

Try that.

What OS are you running? im running win 7 professional 64bit

Also i did install this Normalmap plugin as well:
https://code.google.com/archive/p/gimp-normalmap/downloads

just try that with it, just in case. im gonna be using that for another game texture mod, but if it helps (for some uknown reason) why not. i thought i would get you to try it as its a step i also did.

Another thing i did before opening a DDS image, i just started a new random blank image, in gimp. then i loaded the DDS file. so you might as well try them steps... maybe its a glitch? :P

Well, tried doing this and it doesn't want to work :/ Got "Unsupported DXGI format (99)" this time tho. Both plugins installed. Win7 Pro 64-bit too.

Hmmm i forgot to mention, as a precaution, i added the Gimp 2 folder to the exception list for both AVG and Malwarebytes. Mainly because i ran into an issue where they were restricting java from working for minecraft. so if you have any type of protection try that.

I will see what else i can remember i did so you can follow. we are close. i suspect that plugin isnt working to well with the latest one. to be fair its nearly 4 years old now lol.

I never had much luck with that plugin. Did some strange things to the mipmaps too. The nvidia one works much better, but I couldnt get it to work in GIMP. It will work in JASC PSP, but JASC has trouble leaving the layers alone when saving it.

Currently I use Visual Studio to convert .DDS that cannot be opened by GIMP (with DDS plugin) and convert them to png. VS Can open any .dds
The problem is likely that the gimp plugin is supremely outdated and can't handle more modern compression formats--it doesn't even let you save in them. It's a plugin that is in desperate need of being rewritten and I'd do it myself if I had any idea how...
