I'd say the worst I had was under two hours, but I had more equipment. You are basically looking for a mineral, which the last time I saw on an asteroid, looked very identicle to iron. But that was before they retextured this stuff...

Anyways, other than scanning every cave, mass, and face of every asteroid, I got no real tips.
i ironically found a ton of nickel by mistake. i was testing out a mining ship i built originally on a moon, but this time on an earthlike planet and it plummeted to the ground . through the wreckage i had tons of ice, stone and nickel to collect.

Swap to a large grid ore detector, it can effectivly scan most of an asteroid as you fly around it. With small grid the range small so its easy to miss a tiny deposit inside the roid somewhere :)

I haven't played "too" much yet, but I don't think I've ever seen Nickel on an asteroid, but I see it all over the place on the earth like planet. Have you looked on earth?

Found a whole asteroid with nothing but nickel and ice on it around the earth like planet.

Nickel ore is like Uranium ore, it tends to be in smaller and deeper pockets, your less likely to find it right at the surface like iron ore, so you need to be closer to the ground or asteroid to more thoroughly scan for nickel and uranium.

Thanks for the tips guys, i started fresh today and after 20 mins found a large pocket on the surface of an asteroid 25km away from my base, i got so much my ships thrusters couldnt handle it :D

Folks do remember its quite silly to suggest using a Large Ship Ore Detector if one cant find Nickel. Considering the detector requires it in quantities that it requires it to build.

Oops over half a year necro, i really ought to mind the dates :)

Searched for it after having a good 60 dry asteroids (with scanners o.0)

Another reason I believe that the steam forums' search function leaves much to be desired...

Can we get a lock, Dan?

That function also leaves me with loads to be desired...

edit: assuming that it actually gives me results.

I have downloaded mods to help me with a Nickel shortage after which I promptly found a small asteroid made almost entirely of Platinum. I've had maps where I checked 40+ asteroids and found enough Iron to make a planet but no Nickel.

I'm expecting the rarity of minerals to get a balance pass before the game goes final.
