So I'm snooping around in the SE files looking at how the new HUD is put together and I notice something interesting. You know I always thought SE needed a simple helmet overlay. Just a basic texture that made it look like you were looking out of a helmet when you were wearing it. You know so you don't forget that you're wearing it...or not. Well it turns out that there are a couple of incarnations of this hidden in the SE files and they are all disabled for some reason. It looks like someone tried a few different methods for achieving this but in the end they turned them all off and left the files in the build. Maybe they're still working on it or something, but I was dying of curiosity and since the code was already in the SBC file I just uncommented it...because what's the worst that could happen? I had to move the tag to the beginning of the file because the overlay was covering up a HUD element, but other than that it works perfectly. Whenever you are wearing your helmet a graphic (it's just a black frame) is displayed like you're looking out of a helmet visor. I even went into Gimp and threw together a slightly more detailed image to use for it. It's not going to keep my wheels from exploding or anything, but it does wonders for immersion.

Sadly I tried to make this into a mod, but it appears that some of the files envolved aren't moddable. Does anyone know what the deal is with this helmet visor? Is this something from long ago that got turned off or something? I'm just curious mostly.

Don know but i belive its work in progress. SE needed bars to replace boring numbers, they did it. It needs helmet effect too. I think they will do it eventually.

Personaly i dont go out of my house without this guys mod.

I've shared this thought for a while. In my opinion, with the overlay, because you're looking out and not focusing on your helmet interior, the rim should be out of focus and brought in a lot more, the helmet is round, not rectangular, it would want to be a small(ish) area in each corner. Essentially like the overlay in the Hud linked above. From a 1st person point of view, only your peripheral vision would see it, so you don't want to see the whole thing. This is definitely something that should be implemented for the emersion, and I like your idea with the dirt showing like dust etc.

I hope its more of a "rim" style overlay if Keen were to release it. Simply borders the screen in a nice little design.

The original graphics in the SE files are pretty much just like in that helmet mod. I just felt like I wanted something with a bit more presence for my own use. Idealy this would be moddable and we could just make a few different ones and throw them on the workshop. Really even if they aren't going to finish this feature all Keen needs to do here is just make the files moddable and the mods can uncomment the code the way I did because apparently the overlay render itself is already implemented.
