Distorted sound from refineries/arc furnace and assembler?
I've got the sound set to realistic and whenever I'm in a oxygen free environment and standing on the grid near the blocks their sounds sound very distorted and crackly but fine when standing next to them in a oxygen present environment with and without my helmet on.

I doubt this is a game thing, I would suspect your audio drivers. Have you tried a simpler audio setting to see if the problem persists? I have not experienced this however, I do know that the ambient volume that comes from the refiniery is (very lound) in comparison to the rest of the blocks (not sure why that is). I have tried numerious audio setitng and none of it seems to make a difference - whenever I am near the refinery I for the most part can't hear anything else.

I'll try a reinstall/update of my Audio Drivers, and see fi that helps out. The refinery sound quite loud while I'm standing next to it :S

Wouldn't be too quick to dismiss it as driver-related - both myself and a friend experienced very strange ship sounds when touching the deck in artificial gravity, on a large grid, in space. We also play with realistic sound settings.

It was only once, but he tried flying around for a while to avoid touching the deck before finally saying he had to turn off his headset, as it was crackling like the speakers were going out. A few play sessions later I experienced the same thing, and my first impulse was to think it was my headphones, though they are not very old.

I then rememberd his description of the exact same thing, and sure enough my headphones worked great on a reload, and have never had any issues outside of that single session. So hearing it now from someone else, I'm fairly certain this is an intermittent bug.

Well I've updated my drivers and the issue still persists. I've tried making a new world and it's no different, might try reinstalling the game next.

You said you're using realistic sounds?

Then the distortion is correct, as the sound is traveling up your leg, not through the air.

When I say distortion I mean it's like crackly/staticy

Reinstalling the game fixed it right up.

awesome, good information - thanks for the follow up.

Still wondering if that is what "fixed" it, as again we also experienced crackling sounds through our headsets when touching a grid with a working refinery/assembler with realistic sound enabled, and it went away after a reload. No verifying files, reloading or driver updates on our end. Hopefully if anyone else experiences this, they'll find the thread to expedite troubleshooting and help narrow it down.
